I'm picking up my SKS today or tomorrow,

Where is a good place to take it out to shoot near Vancouver? I live downtown (which makes moving it around a pain, with yaletown yuppies walking about) and I'd like somewhere I can drive to to bring friends, most of whom have never fired a gun. Looking for closest crown land with a good hill to shoot into I guess.

Is posting shooting locations taboo? Looked for similar posts, couldn't find any.

But I don't play guitar :p

I plan to move it around in the box it comes in, at least until I get a proper case. I think I've seen some guys moving a few guns into the apartment before, so I'm not too worried about it, but I've just read a few horror stories here before about guys getting the police called on them for legally moving their firearms around.

I figure if I am moderately discrete, I'm good. My main issue is that my car isn't usually parked anywhere near my apartment, so I usually bike or walk places. Going across the Burrard street bridge with a rifle, while legal, might raise some eyebrows. We'll see I guess.

Yea head out to mission way is where I got if you dont want an acctual range. I live in burnaby and to take my F150 out there is about $45 in gas so if you got someone else with you it works out to be about as expecive as a range trip ($20 a person at POCO) I head out past mission though to wards harrison mills and go up the chehalis forest service road (sp?) There are lots of decent spots to shoot up there. Also I hear alot of people go up Sylvester rd in mission but I have never been there.

You'll find it's a lot less fuss to join a club. It'll open other doors too. Invitations to go hunting, etc.

Can't have ### at the range.

Can't get drunk or whatever else ya like to do.

Can't fish at the same time.

Can't take old tv's ,vcr's, computers, whatever to burn then shoot.

Can't build a giant ass camp/bon fire.....hell ya can't shoot things that are on fire either!

Can't shoot dinner dead if you've got the ticket for it. Ask about the deer @ Poco running across the ranges all the time.

You especially cant dress up mannequins to look extremely realistic then execute them..........

Hmmm a lot of stuff ya can't do there.

Range's are only useful for restricted class and competing.

I've purchased so many Russian SKS's these past few weeks that I am forced to make space in my gun locker, but the SKS's will remain! What does that tell you?
Oh, and two of my three shooters can make up to 3 inch groups with iron sights at 100 yards. You can't expect tighter groups with modern semi's using surplus ammo.
;)

the sks is short enough to fit in a guitar case!

Sure does !! I bought a used tear drop style guitar case off kijiji for 20 bucks.. has the lock latch intact too!!

Here's a ( crappy ) picture... this case fits both my 11-87 and sks

No good shooting in Vancouver, nuff said.

Go out east a bit. MapleRidge/Mission/Abby/Chilliwack area.

Best yet, heres the map of the lower mainland that says where you can and cannot shoot, an which projectiles are all good.

From downtown Vancouver I would rather head north on the 99...once you get near Squamish there are lots of logging roads to go up.

Just don't leave your shooting garbage behind!

Wow, that IS one fine looking SKS, though I've yet to have a photo op with mine.

Just don't leave your shooting garbage behind!
I never would. I backpack a lot, and I am always at any garbage I find out in the middle of nowhere.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Not sure yet where I'll go first yet.

Just got done cleaning, oiling, checking the gun for the first time. I've got it pretty damn shinny... I didn't think I'd have that good a time cleaning all the bits, but there's a real sense of accomplishment knowing each part is spotless, and how that will impact the performance. (forgive my first gun enthusiasm)
