Since I can't afford a Remington 870 yet, I went to the local shop and bought a Stevens 311 in 12 ga. for $150. it seemed to be in very good condition, so i guess it'll do for now. Anything I should know about this gun? I've never shot a shotgun b4, actually the only thing I shot was a 22lr. I've been reading stuff on the web that says you shouldnt shoot steel shot through it cause you will damage the barrell. Is this true? Well if anyone knows anything about this gun gimme a shout, can't wait to take her out hunting and target shooting.

The Stevens 311 is a great buy at that price. While not a high-end gun, it's built like a tank and will work reliably.

If you use steel shot, take it to a smith and get him to open the Modified/full chokes to improved cylinder/modified respectively. It might already have been done, which he will also verify for you.

Just be aware that most doubles are lighter than pumps or automatics and with slugs or heavy loads seem to have a little more felt recoil.

Ricoboxing, you have done well. The 311 was the most popular SxS ever produced. Parts are easily available. It is a great hunting gun, and can be used for shooting clays as well. Inherently strong and safe, the 311 is an excellent first shotgun, simple to use and effective to shoot.

You will enjoy it more if you spend an hour or two at a patterning board seeing where the gun shoots for you. SxS's are a little picky about gun fit and you might have to add some length with a pad, or add some height to the comb with some leather strips - or you might have to do nothing at all. Finding out is half the fun, and a man equipped with a well fitted SxS will have to make no excuses in the field. Feed the gun lead shot for upland and clay shooting, and Kent tungsten matrix for waterfowl.
