got my first SKS but have a question

this may sound stupid, but all i have is a bore rod and brush, nothing else, whats a jag? and, when using the the metal cap on the muzzle, the brush wont fit through it, but the bore rod will...it all seems mismatched! hahah..

The metal cap on the muzzle is known as a bore guide. What it does is keep the metal of the cleaning rod away from the muzzle, where if the muzzle is nicked (the area known as the crown of the muzzle) it can affect the accuracy.

A "jag" is a piece that a cleaning patch is wrapped around to so the patch will clean the grooves in the rifle. It's usually not needed if you have a bore brush, which the SKS normally comes with in the cleaning kit.

Sweet. Thanks! What's also kinda cool is all the numbers match and the stamp on the receiver is tula factory, but on the stock you can see a faint outline of the izhesk stamp

You use every piece of the cleaning kit. Slide the muzzle guide over the cleaning rod first, then screw on the brush or jag. The jag has flats on it that fit into the cleaning kit tube to tighten it, then the other end of the cleaning rod is slid into the holes in the tube. Use the pick to slide through the opposite holes to lock the rod into the tube. The tube is used as the handle.

Ok one more. So when opening the bolt I noticed by opening the mag I can close the bolt. But how do I close it afrter loading without opening mag?

You simply pull back on the bolt and release to close it, after loading the rifle. The reason the bolt stays open after opening when the gun is empty is because of the bolt hold open mechanism, which is activated by the magazine's follower. The ammunition, once loaded into the magazine, will keep the follower from activating the BHO, until the magazine is emptied.
