Got my gun back from the gunsmith and it came free with new dings!

This is a circular problem, as i see it, with more than one cause.

1) Guys don't want to send their gun to a smith because it takes too long to get back. Guys don't want to send their gun to a smith because it may come back damaged.

2) Gunsmiths go out of business because they can't survive. They thoroughly discourage new guys from getting into it. New guys don't want to get into it anyway, because you can't make any money.

3) The smiths that are left are dealing with the (slightly) reduced volume previously fielded by other smiths. Guys ##### about long wait times, which translates into rush jobs where accidents can happen. Reset to point 1.

A good smith with a good reputation is never going to starve for work.

Even a good smith will make mistakes but a good smith will address the mistakes and inform the client.

It's a lot easier today for a handy gun owner to get information and tools online to do a lot of small jobs at home.

:mad::mad::mad:

Got my gun back from my mechanic in Kelowna and it came back with free dings!

Best $300 I ever spent. :mad::mad:

I have a couple spots where the shadows polycoat is scratched down to bare metal.

Other than constant oiling, what is the best way to cover these spots up so they don't rust up?

Hi evolture,

Have you contacted the Smith to let him know? He may wish to make it right with you...

Jeff/1911.

All is good! Let's just say he offered compensation that was above and beyond what was expected! Can't say enough about the follow through from this guy.I feel stupid for being so negative in the first place!

:p

you need to define what needs to be done, and then give him ONLY enough parts to fix it- it's a relatively EASY thing to do to strip most of the actions from stocks, and if it's sitting wrapped in a blanket at the back of your closet , he can't add to it's character-that's a line i've heard so many times it's not funny

This is why I will never send anything away to a smith.

If I can't learn to do it myself F it.

Too many stories of disappearing guns, 2 year waits, and damaged stuff, to risk it!

I simply don't trust em.

:agree: I learnt this lesson young. When i was a teen I bought my first Lee Enfield. It was immaculate... that was until i took it to a gunsmith and had a scope mounted to it... It was butchered so badly (mistakes drilling and tapping/marred finish on stock, blueing damage, etc etc) that i pretty much gave it away, my pride and joy now made me physically ill when i would look @ it. I found another never fired Lee Enfield a short time after and bought it and taught myself how to do everything i needed to do. Now i dabble a bit helping friends out... But I always get into arguements trying to stop people from sporterizing a beautiful Lee Enfield or any other military surplus rifle. f:P:

That's really refreshing to hear... Hey lets be realistic.. Sh*t happens, as long as everyone is mature about it and the offending party makes it right, all should be golden.

You guys are getting s**t smiths. A good smith will go above his way to make everything perfect.

Yeah, well you know what? When one doesn't live in a large metro area, you've gotta deal with what ya got available... that's why i do ALL my own repairs and modifications. I have gone to the extent to acquire a large collection of AGI videos and manuals. I'm no gun-smith... But i'm sure as heck better than the smiths i've encountered here. I'm not saying there's no good gun-smiths here... I'm just saying i haven't come across the right one for me.. But as i said, i've got the tools, and the technical resources that i've acquired over the years.

My good friend bought an SKS from a local shop, that had an ATI stock installed and was done by an "outsourced" local self proclaimed gunsmith. Well what a f'in mess.... It took me about 2 hours of fine dremeling to get the stock installed PROPERLY. And the cleaning job????? It was horrible. He was getting slam fires from cosmoline contamination in the free flowing firing pin. There was cosmoline in the nooks and crannies, still in the gas tube, etc etc....

Never hurts to take a direct approach....glad to hear he's a stand up guy!
Does he have a business name?
