When I first got my 1911 and was changing mags I would release the slide with my strong hand thumb to release it and chamber a round from the new mag. After a very short while I realized there was more control and safety in releasing the slide by pulling it back with my support hand instead. I can't remember the last time I just dropped the slide by using the slide catch.

Holy sh*t we have a winner!! (no offence BC Mike, just using your post to make a point). So the Slide LOCK isn't the easiest and most secure method of releasing the slide. Who would have thought....
