Hell I've been reading all your posts and I just could not resist, so I drove to Dante today an picked up a Steven 200 in 223

Now all I need to do is decide if I want to get into reloading???

By the way I also own a Tikka T3 stainless in 270 wsm, so reloading would help offset the price of ammo.

To all you experts what should I do to the rifle first? (remember low budget and not manually inclined)

Hibou,

....even though it's a stevens like all others....

If it was me I throw on a set of Weaver bases, some medium matte B-Square Lynx steel rings [similar to Burris "Z" rings] and a Tasco Varmint model 2.5-10x42mm AO mil-dot scope.

Then I'd go to Wal-Mart & buy three 40 round packs of Winchester Whitebox 45 gr HP .223 ammo. [Retails for around $18 per 40 rounds].

Your all set for some testing on your new rifle...

Reloading can come later... this econo Winchester .223 ammo just might impress you... ;)

before you shoot it clean the barrell really really good you should have got instruction with the gun, make sure you follow them, then go to the range and put 100 rounds through it out to 800 yds to find out where its shooting, next kill yotes!!!

Save money reloading LOL!!!? Not a friggin chance lol!!!!!!!!!!
But its fun, its and it becomes addictive, say bye to your saved money lol and enjoy every min of it, good luck!

If you have a 270 wsm and now a .223 I would seriously consider investing in some reloading gear. Not only does it save a bit of money in the long run you can customize your ammo to suite your hunting needs. I have also found that handloads produce tighter groups then factory ammo in almost alll my rifles.

I shot a 270 wsm last year for my whitetail rifle and good luck finding 270 wsm ammo in small communites and if you do it will run you around $45-50 dollars, half the price of a good press. Even in bigger centers they sell out of wsm ammo and you're screwed till they get in another shipment and that usually isn't till after hunting season.

Cheers!!

Thanks for all the good words
for Jay at Dante it sells for $337.77 + TX and sorry but I got the last one but if you want to mailorder check S I R at $319.99 and Russell $329.99 and Le Baron in montreal sells for $354.94

hope this helps......

for Goose 25 when I figure out how to load pictures and have installed the scope I'll see what I can do......

but then again you guys have seen them before...... it sure is an ugly duckling but hope it shoots half decent

Scope for a .223 Bolt Rifle.

Ok guys any more suggestions on scopes?
I know I said I had a small budget but give me a idea of you are presently using.

Waithing for tips.........

Not on a Stevens 200 .223 but I have an 'econo' Tasco Varmint 2.5-10x42mm mil-dot on my Rem Model 7 .223 [24" barrel]. Here's what it does with that 'econo' Winchester whitebox .223 ammo @ 100 yards:

I know that Lebaron in montreal usually have a "no tax" sale around March. I would recommend you wait until the sale and go buy yourself a bushnell 3200.

thats what I did last year;)

223 ammo is so cheap it almost doesnt pay to load except for hunting loads. Wholesale Sports sells several species for $5.95/20 so I put a lot of ammo through it. Brass is easy to come across cheap too. I am going to learn to reload and start with the 223, then into the 30cal stuff. My 223 is my baby and I can shoot it all day long. I use it while cooling barrels at the range too.

Check out ebay for scopes too-just bought 2 leupies for what I would pay for 1 used one up here. Bucketloads available and lots of Bushnells too.
