For christ sake.... what is it about this site that nobody can actually just thank the OP for his information regarding the scammer and move on....

OH MY GOD!, SOMEONE IS WRONG ON THE INTERZWEBZ!!!... LETS START A PILE ON TO SHOW HIM HOW AWESOME WE ALL ARE!!!

Gentlemen , I think all the OP is trying to say is beware of this particular seller , and yes , the poice may not be to interested in a summary conviction fraud case.....property cases rank very low on the police radar.....thats why so many people get away with petty fraud......

I'm no lawyer but as I understand it you are better off mailing a money order when making an online purchase. The reason is that if the recipient of the funds has misrepresented them self they are by default guilty of mail fraud. That is a federal issue and the RCPM must respond. In the case of an EMT, I believe it becomes a private small claims court problem and you need to sue the guy. The recipient of a mail order must be the actual person named on the money order (If not then that's another criminal charge) and at least you have a real mailing address for the RCMP to knock on.

Once you have the mailing address you can also use google maps to decide if you think the location looks suspicious.

It may also help to talk to the guy on the phone. If the guy is legit, he wont object. If he stiffs you, well give the phone number to the cops too.

If a deviant character is determined enough he can still screw you but at least you have some bread crumbs for the cops.

A fraud is a fraud. All frauds are thefts. Not all thefts are frauds.

A theft [of money] committed using a money order is just as much a theft as one committed using EMT.

Even though a criminal theft has occurred a victim usually still has the option to also proceed civilly [ie "sue" for the loss].

In Canada the criminal offences of fraud & theft are divided into two categories: Fraud over $5K or fraud under $5K; theft over $5K or theft under $5K.

Police usually are more interested to look at frauds & thefts where the loss is over $5K. They may or may not go further than just take an info report & give you a case number for the lesser offences. Depends on the circumstances & jurisdiction. If you, the victim of a theft, live in BC but the bad guy lives in Ontario, and the loss amount is $150 there is a strong likelihood that other than taking a report the criminal case/investigation is not going further than that.
