got some magnum slugs :D

Rare slugs

Several years ago (when it was still legal) I brought back (from a Gander Mountain store in the U.S.) a few boxes of Brenneke's biggest slugs ... 600 grain 3" Magnums ... I believe the black/blue box (very appropriate) says "For Dangerous Game" and has a snarling bear on the side.

I carry a Marine Magnum as a bear-gun here on the ranch, and have fired a total of zero of those now-impossible-to-get hammers-of-Thor. I gave one box (of five) to my neighbour for his 12-gauge, even though nowadays he mostly carries a 45-70 Guide Gun. I wonder which would be better in an emergency.

I practise with regular Foster-style slugs, but can't help wondering what the Brennekes would feel like !

Damn!

I think you should fire off a few and take video. Or ship me a box ill explode something like an old computer with them for you

It's funny that you mention that ... I'd completely forgotten that I took my maddening old PC out onto the front lawn last summer and (shooting from the deck) emptied the five rounds in the shotgun right into it ... two 00 buckshot and three of those Brennekes. So I guess that I have seven left ... not ten.

What a dumb waste of a limited resource. But ... as my friend Robb says, "There's a time and place for spontaneity."

Is that their 3" Black Magic slugs? I think the problem is no french on the packaging so no sales in Canada. Read through some of the reviews on midway usa's site, one guy stated he had one pass clean through a buffallo! I'm going to be toying around with some smoothbore sabots ;) And I got a full 3 1/2" to play with...hehehe :D

I put some magnum loads through my 12.5" grizzly and apparently (I couldn't see it) there was quite the flame comin out the front. Pretty bad ass I imagine.

I'm taking my girlfriend out shooting tomorrow

I gave my girlfrind 5 bird shot and she was not a fan. She'll get used to it though, it was her first time ;)

If cash is what's keeping you from having more fun with slugs, you could always make your own.

I buy cheap winchester birdshot shells at walmart and melt the bb's into a 1oz slug mold, then pop the slug back into the same shell and seal it off with some caulking. 100 slugs costs me $28, it rids the guilt from range trips with my mossberg :D

youre a smart man. where do i get slug moulds from and can you give me some more info on sealing it off? because this seems like the cheapest way to blast off slugs, 28 bucks for 100 beats a buck a piece :D

What's the velocity ?

I always keep at least a box or 5 of bird shot around, but I looked on the shelf where I keep the interesting shotgun shells. I have:

1 Federal max load 2 3/4" OO buck
21 Federal premium 3" 2 oz (1150 fps) copper plated #4 shot
10 Federal 3" 1 1/4 oz (1600 fps) magnum HP rifled slug
6 Remington 3 1/2" Express Magnum 18 pellet OO buck

There's usually a bit more, I usually keep slugs in 2 3/4" for my Ithaca shorty too. I just have this kind of ammo for fun and camp gun kinda roles. I have never shot big game with a shotgun. I live in BC, barely anyone does unless it's rummaging through camp wrecking #### at night.

I put a medium (~12") pizza box up at 30-35 yards and shot a 3.5" OO buck at it at camp last year with my 26" mod choked 870 super mag and about 2/3 of the pellets hit it. I was just curious, I'm not used to that many buckshot :)

I am looking for 3.5" #4 buck or similar if anyone has a good source.

Yep that's the one I use.. just keep the mold hot enough and you can produce enough slugs in a short time. Keep in mind this s**t is poisonous, not just the lead, but some other chemical that's used to make those bb's round in the factory (forget what it's called)... Melt the shot in a ventilated area!! Sealing is easy enough, just pop the slug back in the original shell and put a ring of caulking around teh slug to keep it from droping out.

Oh.. I have no idea, I never bothered buying a chrono, but the recoil is very light, so i'd guess it's a low fps. Probably not suited for hunting, but good enough for punching paper or messing around with.

Brenneke Black Magic

Yes, it says Black Magic on the box. If you hold the loaded shell up to a bright light you can actually see the shape of the slug inside. It's swaged lead (I've read), and is in the shape of a 45 gallon oil drum ... and (get this) it seems to have a tail just like the mother slug but about one-third its length ... attached to a small rod/cylinder poking out of the centre-rear of the slug.

wicked thanks for the help bud. thats one of those things id have never thought about doing, lol. do you have any pics of the completed slugs you make just so i can see how youve cut the ends off?

I am assuming this is not the plastic shells you are talking about ? because how do you open those up and closing them again ?

Camera aint working properly atm. Just take a razor blade and slice off the first few mm of the tip of the shell while watching tv or something, poor the bbs into a jar. Then when the slugs are made, place them back into that same shell, and put a ring of caulking (or find something better) around the top of the slug. Takes me about 1.5 hours to make 100 slugs.

I've fired hundreds of these from my 500 without an issue, but do this wanabe-reloading at your own risk, I do not take responsibility for this recipe :D

I picked some up to, can't wait to shoot 'em!

(Buck was less than $5 for 5. The slugs were less than $7 for 5)
