Got some new bayonets!

OK call me an idiot, but why is it that bayonets aren't sharpened like knives for the most part? I remember reading why but I can't for the life of me remember.

Is it a faux-pas to sharpen a bayonet?

From a militaria viewpoint, yes. Your bayonets will retain value and interest for collectors if you leave them untouched. As for military convention, many soldiers did it to make a useful knife. The bayonet was primarily designed as a stabbing weapon, although the combination utility knife - bayonet is common now.

Bayonets

The bayonets can be sharpened, if they are not damaging the finish. The sight of a big grind mark on a really great blued German K98 bayonet, stands out like orange in a field of snow. The collector wants to find a bayonet that is untouched.

Like collecting coins, the collector tries to find the uncirculated coin.

A common bayonet that collectors try to find is a Ross M10 that has an unsharpened blade. The M10's were ground to a point so it would penetrate the clothing of an enemy.

OK thanks guys :)

I understand that they used bayonets as a stabbing weapon, but I still cannot grasp why they would not issue them with a sharpened blade so that they could be used as knives as well. Were they afraid the soldiers would cut themselves or something? Or did they have issued utility knives as well?

yes, they had issue knoves as well. Bayonets were never intended for use as a knife in the WW2 era. They were used first as a bayonet, second as a fighting dagger and third as a general purpose entrenching tool only in the last resort.
