Wasn't a big deal... Was just out grouse hunting, and moving my trail camera.

Found it wierd though, that they asked to see my guns. I don't know if they're authorized to do this, or not. The lady officer didn't care about seeing my PAL, just wanted to see my hunting license, and guns.( I went to hand her my PAL card, and she just said "I don't need to see that." ???)

I had 2 20 gauge's in the back seat of my truck. I got out, opened the actions, and showed them to her. I'm guessing they wanted to see them to make sure they wern't loaded in my truck? She asked if I had any birds, I said no. Was just out for a drive more then anything. Anyways, that was all... Took about 10 minutes. They were nice enough.

Nice to see them out. This is the only time I've ever seen them out where I hunt, and I don't think it's a bad idea to have them out and about.

Also found it funny that they found it necessary to put their flashing lights and whatnot on... We met head on, on a trail that is barly wider then my truck.... I had all intentions of stopping, even if just to say "hi".

I think the lady officer was in training or something. She did all the talking, and the guy in the background was just sort of overseeing everything.

No grouse today either... Shot one, but I don't think I hit it, seeing as it buggered off right quick at the high port and I never found it...

They can check your guns because there are restrictions on hunting water fowl with lead shot and rifles. Mag capacity and lots of other things.

There are not firearms laws but conservation laws.

Yesterday we got stopped by the RCMP. Some jack ass neighbour called it in saying we were "upsetting his dog".

Is home is over at least 1/2 mile from where we were shooting with permission. It was a hassle but the officers were polite.

We bagged 10 mallard drakes. Should have limited out but 2 cop cruisers put a dent in our camo.

Nice to see a little enforcement by presence. We had one guy follow us for about 2 KMs with his lights on, before we saw him through the dust. He was not worked up about it. Checked our licenses and that our game was tagged, shot the breeze about who was getting what, and we went our separate ways. Pretty civil, and definitely not a "bad" experience.

It should always be so good.

Cheers

my last run in with a CO involved a 1 hr BS session, some exchanges of opinion, and a couple good tips on where we might find elk. My grandpa would be spinning in his grave knowing that i actually got along with a fish cop, but this guy was good.

We got "stopped" a couple of moose seasons ago 50 miles from nowhere and only accessible by air. The last thing we were expecting when they dropped in on us. No worries - everything was in order. All in all a very pleasant encounter and good to know they were out doing their job. BTW they didn't want to see gun registrations or licenses either - just checked the permits & tags and the rifles to ensure they weren’t loaded in the boat. And the female with the 2 C.O.'s was a police officer.

The CO's don't care about your PAL. All they want to know is if you have the hunting license required and game seals. It's not their job to enforce firearms laws, unless you are violating fish and wildlife regs, nor do they want to do the RCMP's job...

"...weren't loaded in my truck?..." And for a mag plug.
"...50 miles from nowhere..." I'm convinced they hide or maybe live in hollow trees.

Around here they always ask to see you PAL and had one ask about the registration on my Savage Mark II when I first got it and was sighting it in at the pit.

Ont?? CO's have more warrantless search powers than LEO's, including asking to see your guns.

Yea.... In Ont.... I just found it odd that the only thing they really cared about was seeing my guns....

ah well, its done w/ now...

They do exactly that in AB all the time. You were right in your first post, they wanted to see if you had loaded guns in the vehicle.

I have seen them do some crazy sh1t just to pull a person over, and then only ask a guy to see his guns and nothing else.

In well over twenty years of hunting on my own I have only had one bad experience. That feller had to apologize by phone and give us a written apology. He was very close to losing his job over that encounter. He was very happy in the end that charges were not pressed against him.

I've never minded being pulled over by a fish cop. But then I'm also not out poaching.:p
Last year I shared my lunch after getting pulled over and checked for my licence. Bull####ted about guns and caribou for about half an hour.
Gave me a tip on a big bull he had seen.

Thinking about it I've never run into a bad CO.

CO's are LEOs.... You will find that they are designated as Peace Officers in their respective provincial acts, and that they can enforce anything that any other peace officer can, including traffic tickets and liquor enforcement. They just don't because it's not their mandate. However, technically, any act that states the peace officer "must" or "will" should be enforced by them.

As for PAL's, that's provincial because some of the provinces refuse to enforce the act in question, and tell their CO's and Traffic units not to, basically by refusing to pay for a prosecutor on the provincial dime. The RCMP, being federal, is supposed to, but that seems to go by officer.

Also, just as an FYI, RCMP and any other peace officer can enforce the hunting regs. A lot of hunters I speak to don't seem to believe this for some reason....

Just a stupid FYI for those of you who didn't know.
