So since ive been working my ass off at work since sep going 6-7 days a week 12 hour days with with only a couple days off threw the holidays, the project it coming to an end and the reloading bench is calling me. I currently have got a couple excellent hunting loads for the 30-06 using 165gr bullets..(Swift Scirocco ll) and (HPBT Sierra GK) BUT.. why not try something different... Lets go long and heavy... how about 178 or 200gr Hornady ELD-X bullets.. anyone have any experience with these?? i know there fresh on the market so i dont expect alot of info to be available on them but any little bit would help.... So here is the info i can give you...

Rifle is a New Winchester Model 70 Featherlight (30-06) 22" tube
Brass is all New Lapua, Primers.. Mostly CCI 200 and BR2 and Rem 9 1/2
Powders on hand.. LOTS so you tell me what you had your best experiences with in the 30-06 and heavy bullets..

So the the reason Im kinda doing this now is well.. i have the time to do it, the swifts shoot OK(1" groups at 100) for 3 shots but im sometimes getting the odd unexplainable flyer(2-3" in any direction) and well i got the itch lol. I was thinking about just going to a 165 Accubond but these ELD really caught my attention and are not as expensive.

My main quarry for these bullets will be moose where shots can go from 100-300 yards. So accuracy and velocity are really key to me..

200 grn barnes lrx over 53.5 grns h4350 out of my weatherby backcountry 30.06 doing 2640fps. Shot my moose at 458yds with it this year, broke both shoulders down low where its heaviest, heart/lungs were jellied, moose dropped where it stood. Recovered bullet from under the hide and it still weighed 196 grains. No complaints.
 
Was shooting 178gr amax for a bit in my m70 fwt 30-06. 56,6gr of imr4350. H would be right in there as well.

The eld-x are hardly on the shelves in the usa never mind here. I am excited to give the 178's a go though.

Ive been really wanting to try the barns out and there track record is pertty much perfact. The only issue i had with barns in the past was accuracy. but back then i was new to reloading and was not playing with head spacing. from what i understand barns prefer a bit if a jump just like my swifts. I will deffanitly look into the barns though. thanks

A guy I work with just picked up 2 boxes of 200gr ELD-X at Bass pro the other night.. i was in shock.. that is whats kinda making me wanna try them... wonder how they will hold up when hitting something like bone.. hummmm
 
Yeah, the barnes definately like to be seated well back of the lands. On my load with the 200 lrx, its seated just barely past the last cannelure ring for consistant 3/4" groups. All other calibres I load them in seem to end up right around that last cannelure ring...give or take a bit.

yeah they were not a hit in dads 308 but my buddies 300win shot the interbonds quite nicely actully. Just called the LGS and will be about 1-2 months before they see them... i had him put my name on 2 boxes of the 178's. I dont have any 4350 any more but i do have LOTS of 4007 SSC(not affected by the recall), 2 pounds of IMR4831, superformance, RL17 RL19, varget, benchmark, IMR4320... Im guessing the slower powders would be my better powders like 4831 4007 and superformance... For the mean time im gonna dink around with the swifts and see what is causing the odd flyer...

Working with a local shooter and these are the concerns that have come up... check the throat length in your chamber.

Nice group with a wild flyer is a good indication throat length is too long for your bullet.

For a test, try the hrn 178gr Amax or 180gr SST or partition. These tend to have much longer bearing surface length

Or if you really want heavy, consider the Berger 210gr VLD

H4350 will get the job done nicely.

Enjoy but do check the throat length as this guys rifle is pretty much "worn" out new from the box.
