My grandfather only ever shot deer in the head because he hated having to track them. He never had a deer run away.

But you're right a small miss can mean that the deer lives. But the same thing can happen when aiming ANYWHERE on an animal.

One of my father's neighbors no longer allows hunting on his ranch due to finding a deer partially alive with an arrow inside of it. The guy had missed the heart and the lungs.

My shot went in and took out the brain, the back of the head, and the spinal cord along with it.

It's a joke on these forums... there was a thread with some people thinking 30-30 isn't big enough for deer :D
