Got Wood? got a free Savage no 4 mark 1 1941.

Hey boys, just got a free savage built no 4 mk 1 dated 1941. its got full length barrel and original sight. Its got a perfect shinny clean bore blue is really good.Property of U.S. govt has been ground off. Problem is front wood is cut down.
Where can I get wood? I know the savage guns have some kind of weird grooves in the top forend wood. Are these guns worth much?
 
A 1941 Mk. I (not I*) Savage is definitely worth restoring, including spending the time getting the period correct Savage parts. The rear sight should be a Savage marked Mk. I. The rear handguard should be grooved, the way all earlier production guards were. What is the serial prefix? 0C? 1C? I have been restoring 0C386.
 
That was made in the first few days of production.

Early Savage....very rare being at start of production. Can you post a few pictures of the rifle....both sides of receiver and muzzle. If correct you have something worth restoring. The missing correct parts are going to be a challenging both sourcing and price. For example the Mk1 small aperature rear sight is worth $175 +...I'd tried to buy one a few months ago and the guy would not sell at that price. Grooved "Birch" handguard and low cut forend ...very hard to get. I might have correct bands and early mag...have to look. Well worth the effort to make it right. If not a project you're willing to undertake then trade it off for another Enfield that's less costly to restore. Ron

Yep, No kidding.I just spent over 7 bills to hopefully restore three of Bubba's children from the First world war.I think I will be into it for a little bit more though.On the bright side I have Two wedding dresses for Bubba's 2nd world war kids that haven't been tried on yet.
Unfortunately I have no Savage wood to help you out.Who knows, Soon appearing on the History channel Gun Nutz Intervention.As my wife says please help him please!
 
i'll try to get some pictures up asap. As a matter of interest the trigger guard is made from two pieces and welded together. looks factory done too. The rear sight is a mk3 ,and it has the flaming bomb cartouche on the wrist.
the muzzle has bayonet lugs on it but the front sight ears look pretty roughly machined. I doubt it is the original sight ears. Maybe its for sale.........
 
A good place to look for wood is Reich Outfitters. He's in the US and carries a variety of stocks and very good pricing. I just ordered 3 sets of #4 furniture from him.
Numrich is usually pretty good but they make their money on shipping. The parts pricing is fair, just swallow your bile on the postal charges.

What you have is definitely worth restoring. I has had some parts swapped out over the years, but the major parts are original. Is the barrel '41 dated?
