So, went out looking for a elk rifle recently. Handled virtually every bolt action I was considering, and a few I wasn't:

Tikka T3, Remington 700 and 798, Ruger M77, Browning A and X bolt, Sako 85, Weatherby Vanguard, Weatherby Mark 5, Marlin XL7.

Most shouldered well. I loved the fit and finish on the Sako. But, none of them handled in a way that I liked. I guess when I own 14ish guns, and none of them are a bolt action rifle I should realize I don't like them for some reason, but it got driven home to me after that. Off a bench, I wouldn't care, but they just seem clunky somehow.

I think I'm ordering a BLR here pretty soon  More lever guns for me!

What about BAR (.308, .30-06, .338 on E&E) or CZ 550 Varmint Laminated (.308, .416 on E&E)?

Am doing the math on a custom $500 rifle - 200 extraneous parts + 350 Gaillard barrel + 250 brake + 250 stock + 500 smithing + 100 whatever = ~ $1,750 (or 1,500 without brake) not far off the Sako 85 in cost... and may have exactly what you want.

Isnt that nice CGN love
that's terrific
As are you.

i wouldnt even consider buying a vanilla BLR after seeing those :)

they have them in both versions, i prefer the one with the straight grip stock but couldnt find a pic.

Definitely a certain cool factor when you get to camp, taking your gun out of your quad box, snapping it together and having it shoot to a perfect POI.

I love those BLR takedowns...I prefer the straight grip as well but dont really care for the barrel band.

Still cant decide on what calibre I'm going to get. So many choices.

yeah, ive never liked barrel bands.

i wonder what it would look like with the standard forend on the BLR lightweight receiver.

maybe its just me, but the wood quality looks much better on the pistol grip BLR takedowns than on the 'BLR Lightweight' takedowns. the lightweights i have seen do NOT look anything like the Browning catalogue photo i posted earlier.

What I really want is ridiculously rare... a pistol grip laminate in .308. I've seen one in .270 so far. I'd go takedown or not.

At least I am not the Only One...been trying to get excited about a new bolt action (any of those mentioned) for deer on the Prairies and Foothills but I just don't like them.

Lust after a BLR or a Ruger No 1 but as a relatively new hunter I am nervous about a single shot. It's unlikely I would be shooting from any long distance.

I think the Moral of the Story is get what you like and adjust tactics accordingly.

When I first started hunting over 30 years ago I wanted a 30-30 lever action more than any other gun.I owned one for two years and replaced it with a bolt action. In the last 30 years,I haven't been tempted to hunt with a lever action.
