went and sat by a creek in the moutains, sat there and glassed the south facing slope, after a while elk started appearing making their way down the mountain towards the creek, they got almost to the trees when they started grazing across the slope, pretty soon they were out of sight, so i got up and headed uphill on an intercept path, then through a break in the trees stood the bull, so i flopped down prone and let him have a 200 grain nosler partition launched @ 2475fps from a brno 21H. he disappeared out of sight and i climbed up to where he was standing, two cows were standing uphill to my left letting out calls. i climbed up to where they were and all of a sudden spotted the bull laying in some bushes at about 15 yards away. i let him have a second shot in the neck and he went sliding about 30 yards down the slope. getting him out of there was interesting, i went and got some help and we would just get the bull moving and then get out of the way as he would slide down the slope. when we couldn't move him anymore we gutted him and cut him into manageable pieces. not sure i want to shoot another elk anywhere that i can't drive a tractor up to him. the shot in the chest took him on the near shoulder and exited behind the far shoulder.

then yesterday morning spotted a chocolate coloured black bear just down the road from my house, let him go as road hunting isn't my style, if he keeps hanging around though.....

now as i write this i can see 5 whitetails out my window.

Nice bull! Please do not take that part of the world for granted. Many others live in less than ideal hunting country. We should consider ourselves fortunate. ( I live in a wilderness paradise also)
cheers Darryl

Way to go Jason! :dancingbanana:
Looks like Kristian's Brno has served you well so far, and the 8 mauser is more than up for the job!

I once dropped a Muley in a ravine and had to build a makeshift snatchblock to hoist him out of there. I loved every minute of it.:) Some would say I'm wierd.

Elk and moose in nasty stuff, well that's another story........

Congrats!

What caliber in the 21H??

the 21H is chambered in 8x57. i loaded it up with 200 grain nosler partitions. the only one complaining would be the elk, he didn't travel far, and while still alive when i found him, he did not have the vitality to even move when i found him, so instead of poking him with a stick, i poked him with another 200 grainer.

i am having a little regret now, as the freezer is going to be full so early. i might have to take up calling coyotes to take up the slack.

beautiful rack! How long was the shot?

shot was 150 yards give or take.

the butcher called me today, he is ready to cut it. he commented that it is a "big elk". it is just in time too as last night ate the last of the deer from last year.

saw a 2 point in the same spot last night. then a 6 point was taunting me from a hayfield when i came home after the fog rolled in on the mountain. i watched him for quite a while and he showed no intention of leaving even though he could see me plain as day. guess he must have known that my tag had already been cut.

season continues, haven't seen a whitetail with any size yet, i will probably use my LEH doe tag come oct 10. haven't seen a muley yet at all, and the mountains have been fogged in regularily making it hard to glass for sheep.
