GPS. Garmin rino 520 experience.

I got a 530 last year (US model). it seems to run OK by itself. However I ran into occasional problems on last year's moose hunt when I had it running in conjunction with a 130 (Canadian model) used by another hunter set to the same frequency. Problems were the screen freezing or breaking up, or the volume going to zero so i couldn't receive calls. While I could reset the volume when it went to zero, for the other issues I had to turn the set off and on. The annoying part is the problems were intermittent.

Other than that I really like the unit- the peer to peer positioning works like a charm and the unit boots up really fast, I find it easy to read. if I can solve the issue when talking to a Rino 130 it would be perfect.

Some of the accesories are not the greatest. the neck lanyard separates too easily, and the dashboard mount cradle doesn't allow you to run a cigarette lighter power source.

I have the Canadian 520, and it works just fine with a 130 my buddy has. I have had none of the problems that John had. Could be the U.S. varient.

Peer to peer and the text messenging is most excellent.

The 520 is a bit different from the 530. The 530 has compass, altimeter etc. I have heard other stories of the 530 freezing up. Nothing on the 520 though.

Can you tell me about the battery. It has a rechargeable li ion battery. Can you use regular AAs. How much are replacement li ion batteries. How long does the battery last? How long does it take to charge the battery?
Im not a fan of rechargeables thats for sure. They lose their charge in time and then you pay through the nose for a replacement.

Thanks for the replies so far.
