I'm looking for basic functions, not bells and whistles.

Leaning to the Garmin Etrex.

Comments and suggestions?

thnx.......SC

I've got an ETrex. It's OK. Gets you back to where you started from. I've had mine for about 5 years now. No complaints.

They are $157.00 at Can-Tire up here.

Tip: Keep extra batteries in a warm pocket if you are going to be outside in the cold for more than a day.

I bought one this spring from GPS Cental in Calgary. It is a refurbished model,Garmin E Trex.I beleive it cost me $125, shipped to my door. Check out their website , really informative .

I'm happy with the Magellan Explorist.
used a 200 last year, but I bought a 300 this one.
It has magnetic compass, barometer, thermometer and is waterproof.
me likes it.
got it for 199 at Wallmart

Paul, I have used the basic (yellow) Etrex for a few years now and it has worked very well for me. I now have the Mapsource software for it and the combo works great for me.

Good luck.

I just picked up a Magellan Explorist 100 at London Drugs here on Van.Isl. for $119 brand new.Been playing with it for a few days now and like it.My research indicated the Etrex and the Magellan were too comparable to declare a clear victor,so in my case price won out.

i,ve been thinking of getting one of these new contraptions to......my fear of them...is that if i rely on it to much...im out in the middle of no were and it dies out on me.....what do you use for a back up?.......ive seen them point an arrow in the direction you want to go.......and also give you a close distance......or do you just remember the compass reading on the last reading you saw and take out the old reliable compass and hope for the best???

Ideally someone using a GPS in the woods to get them home would also be able to navagate by map and compass anyway. Battery life is not long 10/20 hours so it could easily die on a trip. My only problem with the handheld GPS units is driving with it, much worse then a cell phone.
