GPS tracking your dog

Hi Guys,

Just had a pretty miserable day. My mum lost her dog to the local coyotes. At least, that's what I think happened. Spent the day looking for the dog/body but no luck

Not wanting the same to happen to my dog, but running around free in the bush is his greatest joy in life. Looked into the Garmin Astro series collars - wouldn't keep the coyotes away, but at least I would be able to know what happened

I see in the fine print on the Garmin site that the sale of these units is prohibited in Canada.

Any other ideas what I could use?

He is in Milton Ontario, I know him well and my friends run the Astro on there dogs.

I could be wrong, but I believe that the Garmin collars being sold up here work on a different and weaker frequency(s) than the ones sold in the States- in order to not infringe on, already, dedicated frequencies. That said, there is no shortage of houndsmen up here using them. It really is an issue of safety, being able to locate the dogs once they are out of sight and hearing range.

Yes you could be wrong, they are the same units.

Just curious about those geocaching chips or bugs or zits or whatchamacall them?
I wonder if one could put one on Fido and how well it would work?
I put in a call to my gps store I am content in dealing with.
Just waiting a call back to see what they come up with.
 
horshue is right, MURS frequency is the problem--I heard it was used by the Canadian Military.
I've got the new Astro 330 with 2 collars and its way cheaper than my telemtry system and works way better.
'Course I only use it when I'm down in the states.
 
I have a regular Garmin handheld Rino with radio ability and it runs on a weaker freq. than in the US. It is the exact same unit, simply wired differently. The literature I got with the unit states that it's abilities are intentionally limited so as to avoid breaking Canadian rules. I'd assume that the same rules would apply to the radio collars.

That said, if you're out for the day running your dogs, and you're not next to Base Borden or some other military base, who's going to find your freq, complain and track you down. Don't they have better things to do?
