Grabbing the slide when firing

Works better if you grab and push, while locking the wrist and pulling. Pushes the slide back (only needs 1/8th of an inch) on to the disconnector, then the tough guy can pull the trigger as much as he wants.

"...mythbusters..." Those two twits are SFX types. Neither knows a thing about real firearms.
"...braced his thumbs against the back of the slide to..." Instant broken thumb. The twit in the video has been watching too much Jackie Chan.

Its tricky because its not a move that gets rid of the immediate threat, since the first round is still gonna go off. So on top of executing the technique, you have to combine it with anticipation and ideally some control of where the first shot is gonna end up.

if I'm holding a gun pointed at somebodies face (and if I am dead serious about pointing it at his face) I can tell you that he won't have time to grab my gun, there'll be a hole in his head if he moves even an eyebrow.

Whatever. You would be surprised what reaction times can mean.

Holding the slide as shown prevents the gun from unlocking, recoil is negligible. Weak-wristing is enough to cause a malfunction, holding the slide helps ensures the malfunction occurs. But the main goal is pointing the muzzle away from yourself.

Ive seen a similar video where the shooter simply braced his thumbs against the back of the slide to prevent the blowback

I let someone try my Glock, and on the second shot he stuck his thumb up, and fired before I could stop him. Caused it to jam (the one and only time since I've owned it btw). Tore his left thumbnail half off.

When I trained in martial arts, we practiced having the slide and moving it off the centerline. It works, but I still don't want to be on the wrong end of a gun.

Yup, put your thumb behind the slide and pull the trigger - I've done it and guess what? I can still count to two on my thumbs, no drama, no damage. The important thing is to have the thumb squarely on the back of the slide. If you ever have to jam your gun into something soft and pull the trigger, you need to block the slide from moving rearward, that's the most effective way to do it.
