Grackle and Crow? What to use to shoot them?

You really need to look up armedsask's posts on his blackpowder cannon adventures, imagine with one blast,8 ounces of shot hurdling outwards, lots of flame and smoke:)

Not a bad day, I got 5 of them.

Nice!

If I may offer a suggestion with an international flair, an FN and an office chair may work well for you:)

Good deal! Crows are alot of fun to shoot especially when called in.
I have an owl decoy that I glued a black rag into its claws to look like a crow in distress. Add a cheap Cass Creek electronic call and they come from all over and madder than hell!
Good clean summer fun R:d:

Edit to add, didnt get a crow, was to far away. I got 5 Blackbirds. 4 shot on the wing at distance and 1 sitting up in a tree. Didnt see any Grackals, their population seemed to decline abit with the West nile virus. Red wing blackbirds are thick over here, hundreds and hundreds!

Grackles: 410, 16, 20, 12 - any lead sprayer will get the job done. Crows and raven are almost in varmitter range, cause the they get educated quick, only land at distance, and don't stay in one place long.

Late to the conversation, but shooting grackles/starlings is what we do for fun, entertainment and population control.

Shotguns are great, for practice and points games. But if you have a 'dark' sense of humor you can try an air rifle. Certainly less than what most people would admit to, but it can be really fun. The first option is to hit them just at the bottom of the throat. If done correctly, you will hit the spine with enough force to break it while leaving the bird in one piece. If hit right, the toes will tighten and the bird will hang upside down for a few seconds to a minute! For those skeptics, I have done it a few times.

The other option is to load the rifle with the pellet in backwards. Wad cutters work best for this. When it flys out the skirt will want to open up and upon impact it does. For best results, use a high power air rifle and aim for the center of the chest. Once again, if done correctly, the bird will be de-feathered with the body flying out behind a cloud of feathers! Usually we would use this for sparrows, but with a high power air rifle it works on the bigger birds.

I used to do both of the above as it was a part of my summer job.

Aside from that, the standard 22LR and 17HMR can make a good choice.

And just when you thought you were caught up with edumacation, someone comes along
and tosses more fun into the pile..
Cheerios...........:)
