Grand Power K22 fix for the slide slamming forward unexpectedly

Like many others out there, my Grand Power K22 X-Trim has a super sensitive slide release. If you own one, you know the drill. Lock slide back, place it on a bench, and a nearby barking dog will disturb enough air molecules that the slide will slam forward.

Some new shooters were using my gun recently, and having the slide slam forward when they picked up the gun, just wasn't cool.

I decided to grab a small triangle file, and reshape the little notches in the slide. It now has the slightest reverse bevel, instead of the lame angle it came with. I also took the gun apart, to get at the slide release lever, and filed matching angles on that. Look up your model of gun online to see how to take it apart. I found a great page from Apex Gunsmithing that worked for my K22 X-Trim.

The gun is much more stable now. The slide will still slam forward when I give it a good bump, but placing it on a table won't make it slam forward. I'll test fire it on Wednesday, but so far, I'm very happy.

I don't think many of you would want to take a file to your gun, but if you get sick of this problem, you know what to think about. I have no regrets.

Carefully doing the job like this yourself is usually a better option than sending a gun somewhere and getting it a few month later (and of course you'd pay shipping both ways + work). I've owned a gun with a similarly sensitive slide release and I it could make me mad very quickly because of that quirk (it was "Sig" Mosquito which I've sold long time ago, letting the buyer know about all the problems with the gun).

I have a K22S and it doesn't have a hint of this problem, the slide locks very reliably. It looks like older X-Trims have quite a few problems compared to a little cheaper K22S. Hopefully they are fixed in newer X-Trims.

Yes, the older X-Trims have several issues. No doubt about that! Not sure on the newer ones. I still don't like being a Beta tester.

When I filed the slide, I was careful and took my time. Once the angle was what I liked, I manually put the slide release lever in position and tried to simulate a horizontal force. It slid out of place. So I decided I needed to file the slide release lever too. That metal is soft, and was easily shaped. A few simple test fits in my hands found an angle that worked. Then I assembled the gun again.

About 20 new shooters have used it in the past, and they'd jump when they picked up the gun and the slide slammed closed as they tried to lift it from the bench. Unacceptable.

After the mod, it works great. I even put the gun on the bench with the slide back, and thumped on the bench repeatedly. The slide remained back. If I insert the mag the way new shooters do, with care, the slide will remain back. If I insert the mag with some force, it'll slam home on its own.

It's great now!
