Grandma's Rock Salt 12 Ga Load

"...those pesky little varmints..." What pesky little varmints would they be? If you're in a city, you'll still be illegal. Discharging a firearm with rock salt, is still discharging a firearm. Tree rats will stay away with a liberal dosing of blood meal.
"...Sorry for sounding..." Not at all ck, you're absolutely right. Kill 'em legally or leave 'em alone.

wellt i am not sure but i beleibve a sling shot is not considered a firearm if it is the case grab one and a tub of paint balls and that should help with your urban pest control without hurting the pest beyond losing some pride with his buddys for having technicolored fur

I ruffle a few feathers it seems by this thread. For the city boys in the crowd, livestock owners are always plague by natures wildlife. Coyotes, Foxes, Weasels and wild dogs just to list a few critters that have been known to give problems in rural areas. In certain cases, local ministries will reimburse farmers for damages. As a fully license hunter and a conservationist, I’ve even live trapped problem raccoons and relocated them. The bad part was these coons had lost their fear of humans and were doom to repeat bad habits.
The same has been said for problem bear relocation programs, as some of these animals again had lost their fear of man. Tactics using specifically trained dogs, noise, along with severe harassment has shown promising results giving some problem bears a new found fear and respect for people. I hope some of you are seeing the benefits of conservation and protection of wildlife by non lethal measures.
Now on to ballistics, I’d recommend reloading with confetti if it would give the desire effect. Some Police also have been starting to use bean bags in shotgun loads for non lethal crowd control. Think a paint ball hurts, but at least the rioter will still be alive the next day. But on smaller animals, such a bean bag load, would definitely be more than just a deterrent and may maim.
This is the type of Ballistic Coefficient information, I was hoping to discuss with some of the more season reloaders and wildcat dudes.
I failed to recognize my audience flaming me and I hope the above clears a few things up.

I know of the rock salt well, to well. Not sure if it was a shotgun or one of those big airguns they had. It does hurt like hell.

I have loaded a regular trap velocity powder charge in a AA hull and substituted rock salt for lead pellets. A heavy crimp was required. Worked well on stray dogs. But be careful close range hits MAY injure the critter. I make no judgements or lectures in this post. Have fun.

I can also attest to the effectiveness of rock salt as a deterrant. I got lined up on just as I was swinging over the fence on the way out of a small neighborhood apple orchard with my pockets full. It stung for quite a while and as mentioned above I wasn't going to tell my parents what happened sd I would of caught hell from them for being in the orchard in the first place.

Ouch , right in the pockets.

If you are afraid of harming the animal/person with rock salt in a 12g, what about loading it into a smaller sized shell? With an animal it would probably have the same desired effect but likely a little less dangerous?

Just a shot in the wind.

Like .410cal, 20gauge or 28gauge or something like that?

FYI: Rock Salt and Table Salt are two different things. Suggest you read your first post again.

I never objected to the need to controlling varmits, I object to the use of load which is intended to wound them. If you have the need, then do it properly. a DEAD varmit never returns either. How's that for a "P.E.T.A" member..
I found you a shirt, its geared towards vegans but can also apply to the PETA types who free cows only to have them wander out into the road and be hit by a mini van killing the whole family inside.

There are two dangers; if the animal is facing you, the risk of blinding it;guage doesn't matter. The second danger already mentioned is that the salt gets damp and forms a slug. The fellow in Prince George is not the only one with that experience. A friend of mine did the same thing with a 20 guage although in his case he shot the dog up the ass and it rolled over dead with a somewhat swollen neck (in his account) The shell had been sitting all winter in his propane heated trailer home.
I would think the only use for salt shells would be domestic dogs that you did not want to kill and if so not only choose your shot but also don't store the shells more than a few weeks. I also think that the plastic BB's if available would probably be a much better choice.

Yep. For my critter control I use a replica walther p99 gas blowback I bought in Japan.

The thing is great but safe.

My bedroom used to be on the same side of the house as we kept out garbage cans, so when I heard the racoons trying to get at it I would simply sneak down stairs to where they were and shoot em up. Gave em some good shots at the rump and they took off quick. Doubt it even krinkled any fur but probably gave them a good scare.

I would definately recommend airsoft on them, but I have a feeling that on an animals hide it may not be enough to freak em out. considering the fur and skin there is a chance that they may barely even feel it.

Maybe I "grew-up-wrong"...

Where/when I was a kid a double-barrel full of rock salt 'wern't fur no varmits boy!" It was for zombies. You know about zombies don't you? Those mysterious two-legged creatures that rattle your front door lock at 3 o'clock in the morning and usually jump over the porch railing when you turn the outside light on. The rock salt was for those zombies that didn't react quickly enough to the light.

As for reloading data, I would use load data for the same weight of lead shot in a wad that will let me get a good crimp. You will likely have to use an over-shot card and perhaps an under-shot as well. If you have the Lyman Shotshell Reloading Manual you should find a lead-shot load you can use. But in the end remember that this advice is worth exactly what you paid for it if you don't have the experience to use it safely.

Don't let those zombies get yah boy...
