What does one use for a Lube in an SKS?

I got a can of Graphite spray from Cambodian tire that I use in locks etc...it goes on wet and then drys quick in a slick powdery finish, and is meant for lubing in places that cannot normaly take wet oils. Would this work OK?

Or should I use regular gun oil?

Anyone try Teflon spray?

I used the same stuff on my sks with no ill effect. I use the stuff on my trigger assembley on other firearms as well. Anywhere I know its hard to get at I use the teflon or the graphite stuff. Nothing like having to much oil in your action where the dirt mixed with the lube turns a green texture. A rule for me is. Pending on conditions in a gravel pit its the dry stuff. In winter and rainy seasion its regular gun oil. Unless its minus 30. I read that one fellow found his gun preformed better with the graphite in his 1911 at extremely cold temperatures, not that is fun shooting when its that cold. But neither is skiing, but we still do it.

Be aware that graphite and aluminum don't mix well... bad juju

Glad you brought that up Mike. It has been said that graphite and aluminium do not mix. So as a rule graphite, which may promote corrosion of aluminum, ferrous, magnesium, zinc or cadmium alloys or platings and should not be used in contact with any of these metals. Not that you have to worry about that with the sks. But if you do have aluminium frames etc. I would opt for the teflon dry lubes. I still use the graphite on my steel components.

Never used anything more than a bit of synthetic grease on the rails for my sks.

However I have used telfon lube on my 1911 and it works pretty good. I find that it seems to last longer as it paints onto the wear surfaces. I can't see why it would not work in a sks.

I posted a question way-back-when about the remington teflon dri-lube or whatever it is called.

You can spray this inside the action of a semi (within reason) to offer lube and protection?

Well I learn something every time I come here. Graphite lube on a 10/22 (aluminum receiver) would actually promote corrosion... I never would have guessed. Thanks for the valuable info - I'm sure graphite would have found it's way into my 10/22 eventually (I use it on my handguns).

Yep Spray away. Any lube is better then no lube. the teflon will not harm the aluminum receiver. If you are going to use the graphite stuff from crappy tire. Watch out!! That stuff moves out of the can fast. The first time I used it I oversprayed my walls. workbench, t shirt, the cat. It was not a happy home that day.

Hahaha!
I was just going to mention this...That Graphite spray comes out like a jet, and sticks into semi porious surfaces like nothing else...ie drywall. Thankfully soap and water helps in the clean-up...before wifey sees it. :D

Graphite lube will be fine, I agree. I personally use Pennzoil lithium/moly grease, $4 per tube at Lordco :D Pennzoil EP 302 Multi-Purpose Grease
I'd recommend using grease for the trigger assembly surfaces, and the bolt/bolt carrier guide rails, although the graphite stuff will probably work just fine for both applications. The bolt in most chinese SKS's is chrome plated or phosphated, as is the bolt carrier, and I'm not sure how the graphite would react to the coatings. I also lightly grease inside my gas tube and gas piston/operating rod, but you don't have to ;)

For now until I get the stuff recomened I cleaned her up and used the Hoppes Gun greese in the action, and trigger surfaces, and some Rem spray oil in the gas piston area.

I know some run these dry'ish, but I just can't bring myself to having metal on metal...even with a Chinese SKS. And besides I'm going to clean and relube after each use anyway.

She sure is silky smooth now. :D

I hope my registration card is in the mail tomorrow.
