I was wondering what is the best to use on the slides. A friend told me graphite would work well there. I'm sure somebody has already tried it.

Sounds like a good thing to try to me. There are quite a few dry lubes that might work well. I use some spray moly stuff - don't remember the brand.

I don't like the idea of any sort of goop in the works to pick up dirt or gritty residue.

Try Slide Glide. Once I started to use it on my P266, there was zero increase of wear markings on the barrel and frame rails. My only regret was I didn't get a chance to use it on my gun from new.

Slide Glide on all slide friction points including: recoil spring/guide, frame/slide rails, barrel, hammer, and anywhere else the slide touches.

Good penetrating gun oil on all other friction points.

Good Luck:)

It depends on gun make-up and conditions under which it is to be used. You can use graphite on Glocks (very little and not too often) but Copper-slip is what the factory uses. Light oil is good for steel to steel contact and can easily be wiped off it becomes contaminated with dirt, sand, etc. Light grease is great for sealing up gaps to prevent moisture entry and is good for people never get around to cleaning and lubrication. At low temperatures it is often best to run the gun dry as lubricants can cause functioning issue.
In general see what the make recommend and e-mail them if you have any particular issues. Remember some gun can be damage with the over use of the wrong cleaning and lubrication products.

Graphite is great as far as being slick and enduring, but it also considerably accelerates wear {being somewhat abrasive} and when combined with moisture it will cause unprotected aluminum to corrode quite badly. I don't use it beyond using it to help to break in guns that need it, and even then I'm careful to clean it all out of there when I'm done.
