Great ballistic test from Norma

Wonder if these are going to consistently exit whitetail at 308 win speeds (3200 fps muz vel.)

I’ve recovered about 10% of the Barnes bullets I’ve shot into game. A smaller percentage of that for deer. But there are a pile of variables and I do make an effort to look for bullets. I have for years. I’ve even recovered bullets from “soft” bears. But there is a tremendous difference between a five year old and a ten to fifteen year old bear.

I believe you on the bears!! Thats a big ol bear!

Thinking the 110s will act pretty much like a 150 cup and core. Open wide, not much shank.

A big bear weighs half of what a big elk weighs. So of course.

But a big bear can weigh double what your average whitetail buck does.

Would go 9.3x62 over the 45/70 10 times outta 10.

And something like the 30-06 over both :)

Hard to argue with 9.3x62, I think people get the impression I’m Weatherby minded, not at all. Just want to see bullets reaching animals 2200fps and above, any modern cartridge can accomplish that at typical hunting ranges. The faster it starts the longer you can pull that speed of impact off, is all. I’d choose a 9.3x62 with the Accubond for the old job over the .30-06, but I’d happily carry a .30-06 too for straight hunting.

How to kill a sheep in 1936. Some things never change.
My first shot was low, through his brisket," Chadwick said. "He started off at a terrible speed, and I started to pour lead into him. I shot four times, one of these hitting him lightly in the hip. Roy followed him on the run, and when the ram started up the mountain he could not keep up with the other sheep. This gave Roy a chance to get in the finishing shot.

Out of all animals I have shot with my .303 using 150 Barnes bullets, I have only recovered one, and several of those shots were well past two hundred yards.
I load that bullet at 308 Winchester speeds

Nice! Always wondered how those ones do!

Wondering about the 110s here a lot too...would be quite a sting I thikn

I've shot one whitetail buck with 143 eldx (6.5) and one black bear with 178 eldx (308) , both under 100 yards, and both worked as expected. The deer required a second shot but the bear flipped backwards and died.
When it came time to get ammo for the 7mm rem mag, I tried the 162 eldx ammo and the terminal ascent 155 grain ammo. Both were very accurate, but I went with the 155 stuff. I wanted a tougher bullet.
Last sunday I saw what those 155 t.a's do on a small buck. My buddy used my rifle to shoot a 2 point at about 200 yards. Wow, talk about meat trauma. Behind the shoulder shot ruined part of the shoulder even. Instant bang flop though.
I was surprised the t.a's didn't come in 175 grain bullets, but as Ardent says, the velocity with the lighter bullet certainly works.
