Great day at the range

Well, maybe I didn't get to shoot as much as usual, but it was worth it. I had taken a friend from work out a few weeks back for his first time shooting pistols. He fell in love with the sport and has since taken the PAL courses and sent away for his permit. He's a single dad who has raised a remarkable eleven year old daughter, and wanted to get her out to try shooting, so we went. I helped her to try my .22 winchester lever rifle 9422 first, (she done amzaing with, put a couple in the 8 ring @ 25 yrds.) but it was my 617 that she impressed me with the most. I had to help her #### it to shoot in single action, at 25 yrds she put 4 out of 6 shots on the paper(not all in the rings, but way better than my first time shooting a handgun) on her first try. She was so excited. I spent most of my day helping her and letting her dad shoot my 9mm, but it was awsome to see someone who never had an opinion on the sport before have so much fun.

Great story! 25 yards is not a trivial distance either—that's very good for a first time shooter, especially an 11-year-old!

Why are you starting a novice shooter at 25 yds with a handgun? You should be starting them at 3 to 5 yds to instill confidence.....

She wanted to shoot "her" same target(as the riffle), and at the same board her dad was shooting at. Also, the shortest target board we have at our outdoor range is 25 yrds, we could have made a target stand, but we were both extremely impressed with what she had done. This girl has no confidence problem. I'm just happy to be part of the experience, and the fact that she wants to go again. But, that's a good idea for next time.

She hit paper and had fun......nothing more required. Kids are not as sensitive as adults, they have fun participating more then the actual competitiveness.
Besides, she was on paper...what more could you ask for?
Not everone needs to be babied into the sport with a target they can spit on......:p

I can only hope my daughter (eight years old) and my son (5 years old) will one day share my enjoyment of a night of shooting. I envy your freind a little but mostly am happy for him that he can share something he enjoys with his child. If nothing else, quality time with a child can only bring you closer, and it may be something she loves so much she may become a champion.

Yeah, my wife and I are expecting our first in October, and I pray that I can have the kind of relationship with my kids that this guy has with his daughter. He really stepped up when her mother left, she's turned out to be a great kid. Who knows , maybe a future olypmic shooter.:)
