That flippy-floppy rear sight cawt me attention as well.
Should be a serial number or portion there of on the top tang
groove on the rear stock.
Or a part of the serial number stamped in the wood.
May have to look real hard to see it.
 
Need more pics..........end of magazine and last section of lower portion of barrel..........Looks like mag was cut, in which case take 'er out and hunt with it as it has zero collector value, and is a great deer cartridge. Or just hang 'er up 'cause she was granddads.........

I'm not convinced the mag tube is cut, to me it looks like it started life out as a SRC. Look at the one screw on the left side of the receiver that is not factory , that is plugging the saddle ring hole. I'm not 100% but didn't some SRC's come with 3/4 mag tube? I think he just needs proper SRC butt stock.
 
Looks like a 2/3 mag which was an option at the time. It may be original if there is no notch near the end of the barrel for a front barrel band screw. Butt looks like a later addition to me.
