Great out of the box non-restricted black rifles?

Only accurate rifles are interresting... JP.

I have yet to find a semi auto that shoots accurately enough to satisfy me - so I have several long range bolt guns as well. I mainly shoot steel and paper from relatively short ranges with my semi autos. I love long range too though.

If the ar15 ever becomes non-restricted..... I'd be going for an OBR, SR25, or some other pricey 308 AR that is known for accuracy. I've thought about buying an FNAR but haven't gone there yet.

Not when it come to shooting steel and running around. You want reliability first and foremost.

Exactly. Breaking guns is annoying. Once I found the tavor, it was weird to not have to troubleshoot and fix it haha. Now that I've talked it up I'll probably break something on it this year.

I ordered a mini-30 to satisfy my semi-auto cravings for the time being, seems quite suitable for our 5 round max :) Down the road i could see something a bit more "black" joining the stable, thanks for the wealth of knowledge everyone!

Avoid T97 and Tavor at all cost.
Get a SG540 or SKS

Completely disagree with... well, all of this except the T97 comment, which I'm not qualified to discuss as I haven't owned one. SKS is OK, but isn't a black rifle IMHO, so not sure why it was even mentioned.

My suggestions are similar to those of onetwentyish and mspben overall, but with some minor differences. I've had very good luck personally with the following:

Tavor in 5.56
XCR in 7.62x39
XCR in 7.62x51
ACR in 5.56
RFB in 7.62x51 (though I really see it as a fancy hunting rifle more than a black rifle)
Vz58 in 7.62x39 (ideally a Cz, not a CSA. Cz858 and CZH2003 are awesome)
Valmets in any caliber (though mags for the 5.56 ones are stupidly expensive)

I wouldn't hesitate to buy any of these again.

...black rifles I personally would NOT buy again, after having owned or used extensively:

CSA Vz58 in 5.56
Mini-14
M14/M305 (worked well, just too big and heavy for my tastes)
Benelli MR1

just curious: why the Mini-30 instead of the Mini-14?

Nobody introduce him to LAR Pistol mags or worse yet, .50 Beowulf mags.... he will regret his choice!

Good choice for the price point and have fun.

too short.

I agree. I have some beowulf's, but I don't like how short they are. I need to get some that are the same shape as 30 rounders.

I hope he enjoy's the mini 30. i haven't owned one yet. Post pics when you get it!

Another hater. My T97 is fine. you looking to win awards or have a reasonably accurate and reliable rifle for a reasonable price. The T97 is a well built rifle worth the price. I have seen ARs built to less quality. I cant vouch for MOA rating but mine is straight out of the box and will hit a coyote size target over and over at the 200 yard mark with the number 4 peep sight that came on it. I have done a lot of shooting with peep and iron sights in the past, not with scope. So i can say with certainty that this rifle is a good one.

I had it out last week. here is the one shot i made for accuracy after i was done pounding rounds into a dead cow. There is a video for the curious.

first green circle is the rock i was aiming at. second green circle is the impact point. One shot fired and one hit. 183 yards.
