Greatest cartridge ever invented? no magnums

The 110yr old 30WCF (30-30) has to be the answer. The 30-30 was the first real magnum that was pefectly matched to an easy carrying lever gun that is still popular to this day.No other cartrige even comes close in popularity, and has this kind of history behind it.

I'd vote for the .30/06 given your criteria, but the greatest sporting cartridge of all time is the .375 H&H. If you have a .30/06 you may still have a need for a powerful rifle, but if you have a .375 you don't need a .30/06 (military applications not withstanding).

The .303 British
Despite its rimmed and tapered case, the .303 must rank as one of the most significant and successful rounds ever made. Well over 100 years old, it still gives sterling service world wide, and it more than deserves the accolade “venerable”. There is no reason why it should not go on for another hundred years.

30-06 hands down. Can be loaded down to 30-30 specs for deer, or recoil sensitive shooters, loaded up to 308 for a little more punch for larger game and again less recoil, or maxed out to equal the 7mm Remington mag. Handle bullet weights from 110gr. to 220gr.;) Will down a moose just as quickly as any magnum.

Since we are free to define "greatest", the 8x50R Lebel. The first small bore military cartridge designed for use with smokeless powder and spitzer bullets - introduced in 1886.

Post 2000 for me!

Another for the .22 LR. You cannot get a more fun, food getter capable cartridge than this. More people worldwide shoot this one. It doesn't matter if you own a .270, a .338 or a .500. Most folks don't own all three, but I can almost garuntee all folks own a .22 rifle.

I don't, though I have in the past!

I picked the 8 mm mauser because it influenced all down stream cartridge development. The 7x57 was a necked down 8mm. The 30.06 was an slighlly lengthened 8mm. And so on.

I thought the 7x57 came before the 8x57. Oh well live and learn. :)
