top of the stock behind receiver says made in england? sportered obviously, but still has the cutout in the stock for the sling and stamped on the side??
Stamped 6.5x54 on the side which after some googling tells me it was a greek capture. also stamped 17.5 tons per []". Pressure rating Im assuming? Also Stamped IT.Also very small what looks like crossed swords with the letter B. Above the IT has a stamp BNP with some sort of crest above it. Has the crown and FAT 42 on the top. on the other side has a small crown and shield looking stamp.... Im gonna pull it aprt and see what else I can see shortly..... So can anyone shed some more light on the stamps?? Oh also has a serial number AK#### Thanks all:cheers:

edit... Tried to get pics of the stampings but my camera sucks....

The notch in the handguard in front of the rear sight? It is for the rear sight leaf when it is flipped all the way foreward.

As Tiriaq stated, Flip front sight all the way forward and rear sight drops nicely into cut-out leaveing the "battlesight" exposed. With my Cavalry Carbine, useing .268 160gr it ranges out as per spec. Top of the front sight even with the top of the rear sight is just a touch low at 300m and dropping the front sight to "just"visible is dead on at 100m. A rather interesting idea for sight adjustment.

Wd113, could you post afew pics of the proof marks and maybe a couple of the other side of the gun? My brother bought a 6.5x54 carcano at the last show we went to. It's in rough shape but it matching and the bore is mint. I plan to do a resto job to it and if you could help me out with afew more pics that would be great for a reference!

Weren't the Eaton's Carcanos rechambered to 6.5X54 ? As far as I know, the Greeks didn't officially rechamber any captured Carcanos, they had plenty of captured Carcano ammo to use for them.

I'm working on an identical gun right now which is my brothers. It appears from the research I've done these are british built sporters, done in the 1960's or 1970's. Built from an original model 91, and rechambered at the time of sporterization. The one here has British proof marks on the reciever, barrel and bolt, as well as the same markings listed by the op.

I guess there was lots of 6.5x54ms in brittain at the time so it was quite common for gun smiths to rechambered these guns.

Not sure if my research is correct but it seems to fit with the markings on the gun I'm working on.
