Green Party and hunting.

There are some common causes here (though I would argue Greens have no future outside of urban ridings).

- hunters and environmentalists share concern for the preservation of natural areas. The modern park system was created by Teddy Roosevelt, an avid hunter, who was concerned that there would be no wilderness left. This would join hunters and Greens in airing concerns over large appropriation of wilderness lands and the maintenance of healthy animal populations.
- Greens have concerns about the quality and purity of our food sources. Hunters obviously get their meat right from the source and avoid all of the issues in factory farms
- Those Greens who accept that animals still must be harvested in some way for meat eaters may be convinced that hunting is a more ethical and sustainable way of harvesting meat, albeit on a scale that in no way can approach industrial methods. Having a personal connection to one's food source is a plank in the 'back to nature' ethos embraced by many Greens.

And you know this how? They have approached me asking for insight from the hunting community. I in turn put it out there for discussion and input from fellow hunters. A closed mind is a waste of a very important resource my friend.

My study of human nature leads me to believe the greens are attempting to use you to legitimize their party platform to hunters. Will you take a govt. job while holding your nose
when asked to support their platform? Probably, but we are all human and have many shortcomings. Many cultures have a proverb that translates as "a leopard will not change his spots". Hunters and shooters don't have a place in the minds of most green voters.

I think they were against handguns and semi-autos in their last two federal election platforms. Therefore, they are not our friends.

The Green party strongly opposes the seal hunt, they want to ban all handguns and "assault" weapons and they are against all forms of hunting other than by aboriginal subsistence hunters. If you don't believe me check their platform. Google works really well for this.

This is the wrong website to ask for advice about a party 99.9% of members despise, as they would like nothing more than to ban EVERYTHING this website's followers enjoy. It's like a rabble.ca member asking about advice on joining the CPC.

You've been sucked right in by them. The closed mind is your own.
Reminds me of the term Stalin had for all the western left wing "intellectuals" that supported communism back in the 30's. "Useful idiots" he called them.

With the growing trend towards eating organic food, growing yor own crops, eating 'locally" and self-sustenance, I believe they're seeing the way the ship is heading.
I think it would be advantageous to talk with them, get their input, and give yours, stressing the Hunter/Conservationist aspect of it all. Hell, take some of them shooting. Easiest way to get converts is at the gun range and the dinner table Invite them for Elk chops or Moose burgers, and let them know what hunting means to you, your family, and the BC environment as a whole.
Stress that no concessions will be made re; "Can't hunt wolves, can't hunt G-Bears, etc, and see how they react. (Hold that one til last though, and get it in writing)

Three advantages come from this:
1) It will split the left if they get more support.
2) We might actually get more hunters out there buying licenses, etc.
3) Other parties will see that "Holy crap, even the Greenies are Pro-hunting", and try to outdo each other winning "back" our votes.

This could all work to our favour.
Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.

Discussion without personal insult generally comes to a more beneficial outcome for all concerned. At no time have I mentioned the federal Green Party, we are discussing the provincial one. Is here any similarity between the federal Liberals and BC's Liberals for example? Being an elected union rep for 21 years at CN provided me with a rather thick skin so insult away, go ahead and call me an idiot if you will. I will just consider the source and move on. I consider this a chance to get in on the ground floor of a provincial political party and would prefer to keep this discussion in that area as hunting is a provincial mandate. At no time have I mentioned the feds or collaborating with them. Let us try to stay on topic.

Not sure where the fed green Party came into the discussion, but my post was intended to be a history lesson, about how the gullible were/are used by somewhat less than honest politicians and other scoundrels to further their own aims. Stalin actually used that term.

it seems that in pretty much every other country that has a green party that they are nicknamed "watermelons", green on the outside, red on the inside.

Firearm regulations are a federal mandate and have no bearing on provincial hunting regulations. Provincial hunting regulations is where I would like to keep the discussion. Without going into detail I questioned them on every aspect of their hunting mandate. They seemed willing to listen. For eg. I used the spring bear hunt being banned in Ontario and the devastating economic effect it had on the regions where it was a large part of the economy. Added to this CO's had to run around destroying nuisance bears at a cost to the public coffers as opposed to a hunt that produced income. They contacted me today and want an itemised list of what the hunting community believes is the correct way to go. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. They openly admitted they have no expertise in the area and no one from the hunting community on their advisory committees. Any political party needs a basis of support. They are young party in BC and realise that many areas where ridings are up for grabs are rural ones and have a large hunting presence. In general terms they are willing to accept advice from the hunting community on a viable hunting policies. That is a positive. I do not pretend to understand the needs or wants of many big game hunters as other than moose hunting I simply have never done it. I am looking for advice as to what to put in this policy sheet. I realise the Green Party is an insignificant political presence during the present mandate but given the volatility of BC politics who knows what happens the next time around. A minority position would give the Green's power even with a small number of seats. The location and number of ridings in Northern BC provincially as opposed to federally changes the game dramatically. The Liberals have been putting the blocks to Northern BC for so long they figure it is the status quo. People are tired of the ineptitude of the NDP. The Green Party indicated everything is up for consideration. I want advice from people with experience, people in CO positions would be an excellent source. My general approach has been that hunting should be viewed a wildlife management tool. I asked them to remove the emotional Winnie the Poo approach, as I call it, and approach hunting in a pragmatic fashion. They concurred. I am going ahead with this and would appreciate any input, the more heads involved the better. For eg is the LEH system presently in place a winner? What changes would make it better? I will be working on this through the next while and would appreciate any positive help extended. At present the Liberals are all about big business and the NDP are a big joke so what do we have to lose? Thanks.

So, in a nutshell, you want advice from CGN members on hunting in order to have the Green Party GAIN popularity?

Good luck with that. Laugh2

And BTW, this thread should be in "Off Topics" or the political forum.

I called them last federal election to ask them about their policy on firearms. They answered that they would only ban semis.
Goodbye.

Just in case folks aren't reading the link to the Green platform referenced above: here are two bullet points from the list -

Elizabeth May said:
Work hard to create a registration system that is fair, free, and easy to use. Streamline the gun registry in consultation with First Nations, and with gun sports and hunter organizations. We support the elimination of registration fees for hunting rifles and will ensure law-abiding citizens do not have their firearms confiscated.

Ban handguns and combat weapons including semi-automatic rifles and assault rifles. Eliminate their use through consultation and a full buy-back program. Consult especially with holders of collections to ensure guns are rendered non-functional to eliminate usefulness to thieves, and with target shooters to establish safe and protected locations where target shooting can be practiced.

So, if the Greens have their way, hello new registry and bye bye handguns, semis, and target shooting anywhere outside of a range. No thanks.
