I have a friend who recently showed me his great-grandfather's Greener 12 guage SXS. I took some digital pics of proof marks and such, and am waiting for them to be sent to me before I can post them.

The shotgun itself looks to be at least 100 yrs old - there was one number on the inside of the reciever next to the proofs that looked like it said 1871 or 1891. It's got tons of scrollwork in silver, and Damascus barrels. The sad part is it was left in a canvas bag under the bed in the cottage for the last (many?) years and has some surface corrosion, especially on the barrel.

Who could he go to in order to get an accurate value of what it's worth?

Try here: http://www.gunshop.com/ These guys really know their SxS's. A local gun shop may also be able to help. I myself love the Greeners and have a couple. Greener made several grades of guns, everything from a knock-about field grade to something that only royalty could afford. They still made guns today http://www.wwgreener.com/ Pictures would help a lot to place a value on it. It sounds like the gun will need some fairly extensive restoration work - the grade of gun will determine if it is worth spending the money on restoring it or not.

Greeners are great guns. The factory should be able to provide you with a history based on the serial number. Post the pics - the proof marks will tell a lot. It is unusual for Greener or any English gun maker to stamp the date of manufacture on the gun. The barrels may be rebrowned, and if not overly pitted the gun may still be shootable with black powder shells, or handloaded low pressure nitro shells. Have a knowlegable gunsmith check it out. Value can only be assigned when the condition of the gun is known.

Here is a serial number table for W.W. Greener, showing year of manufacture, from Gunshop.com:

YEAR GUN #
1878 19304
1880 22860
1895 38917
1902 50911
1915 58536
1920 62621
1930 68635
1967 79259
