Any thoughts on the Greener Police shotgun, the 12 Gauge caliber? Heard they were made up around 1922, were they newly made then, or were they just converted 1885 long lever rifles? Considering the purchase of one, just to say I have got one. Good a reason as any. Might be good enough for the really slow shuffling zombies.:p

Think they were made for quite a long period. Action is similar to the M-H, but as far as I know they were purpose built. Many are not 12ga, but an odd bottlenecked 14ga based on a 12ga. case. Used a 3 prong firing pin, case had a groove for 2 of the prongs. Idea was that the gun would be useless without the special ammunition. Have heard of them being rechambered to 12ga. I rebarrelled one to 12, no big deal. Used a barrel from a single shot, removed the lug, threaded the shank, didn't have to touch the chamber.

I sold 3 about 10 years ago for twice what I paid in auction to cover my silly season buys. About £50 a piece then, made up until the 60's I believe and still in use for pest work etc. many were sold in police special with the funny cartridge arrangement and many as ordinary 12's. sadly the odd ones are more collectable and were converted readily due to need for use and lack of the odd ammo!

Unless the reciever is date stamped they are modern guns. I am told that the extra 2 firing pins can be easily removed; lugs on a ring I think. The shells can be formed from Winchester AA shells using a die heated in boiling water. Ordinary field grade shells will collapse using that method.

People like me still need a practical reason to have a gun, the 14 gauge shells are probably reloadable with great difficulty, that's why I am ordering a gun that's chambered for something easy(12 gauge X 2-3/4") by the way, is it okay to shoot slugs and buckshot through a Greener Police model?

Just got it, the barrel is marked .719", does this refer to the unchoked bore diameter, if so, it looks like it has a choke as the muzzle is about .709", will those challenger slugs be safe to fire in it? How about buckshot? It's got to be checked out by a smith anyway before I can do anything with it.

I have a Greener Police in 12 Gauge. It came that way from Greener and is proofed for 1 1/2 oz loads. It has no choke and shoots shot, buck and slugs just fine. The recoil is a little brisk with slugs, make sure you put your thumb on the thumbrest and not over the wrist of the stock.
