Greenhorn. First gun. Cheapskate.

Alright. So .223 bolt it is. Last question.

If by chance i have more money to spend on a rifle , what 223 bolt would you recommend in the 500-700 dollar range ( new or used; price includes optics)

What is the difference between a 300 and 600 dollar rifle anyway?

I think between those guns will be what material the stock is made of and the machine quality of the metals. I would buy a Remington 700 series based off all the reviews and my own research.

Buy a Savage Axip XP or a Savage Axis 2 XP and spend more on ammo

Or

buy a Savage Axis HB, get good glass and spent the rest on ammo and shoot a lot

Love mine

Not for sale :p

Buy a savage axis to start.
I hate to say this but
You dont know what you want yet!
The more you shoot the more you learn and the more your wants will change.

If you want to do long range. Stay cheap (i.e. 223)
You can still send a .22 1000yards with the right knowledge and that will be far more difficult to do than say a 300win mag.
Mass is your friend at long range so you will learn the same shooting more at 300yards with a 223 than shooting less at 600 with a .300

Don't do it. Friend of mine bought one and we all HATED it.
Follow the old rule of you get what you pay for.

You happen to be the only one discouraging me from getting the axis. What is wrong with it? ; or in other words what did your friend find wrong with it?

I had a looksie into other rifles , and I've expanded my selection a bit.

Ruger American
Savage axis
Remington 783
Remington 700

Opinions?

I believe the rule of thumb is the cost of glass should equal the cost of the rifle. Painful yes but a good guideline. You can make do with less but glass is worthwhile investment.

The axis has its haters because of all the corners cut to get the low price. It gets the job done. There are better rifles out there for not much more though.

Id put the other savage rifles in your list, ie the 10&11&12

You should hit up some gun shows when you are ready.

If going savage I would skip the axis and go to the 11-16 models like trophy hunter that come with glass. The stock Axis trigger is pretty horrible, but can be easily modded.

Personally I would be looking on the EE for a Weatherby Vanguard 2 - Way more bang for your buck, but are above $500 used. Maybe put up a WTB ad.

And don't discount the SKS, they are alot of rifle for $200 to $250 ish, plus 20 cents a round of corrosive ammo will get you alot of shooting.

Once i get proficient at about 400-600 yards with the .223, I'll switch up to a larger calibre.

But i was looking around and it seems to be able to get .223 to go that far a barrel with a high twist rate is needed. All of the rifles I'm looking at are with twist rates of 1:12 . scouting around on other fourms, they seem to be telling me that with that twist rate anything beyond 300 yards is a far fetched story. Due to not being able to use heavier weight bullets.

It seems the only acceptable rifle is the vanguard in this respect.

Should i ignore the 300 yards and beyond ranges entirely for now and just get the Axis, shoot bulk ammo until I'm acceptable at 300 yards, then think about something else?

Get good from 0 to 300, then push it further. Our guys who do the shooting team shoot up to 600m with 55gr IVI ammo out of some C7 that have been around longuer than its shooter sometimes.

Also, if you end up not liking it, Axis/Axis XP wont set you as far back as an expensive setup. No need to break the bank. Reason for the axis XP : accutrigger. Good enough for that kind of shooting

All this talk made me want to take out my Axis HB and have some fun now :p
