Greenish blue residue

Hi all
I'm just starting out shooting, just got my non-restricted, and had a friend i work with give me one of his old .22's. Today he came in and gave me a big box of all kinds of cartridges. He's kinda silly for giving me all these different kinds, since all ive got at the moment is the .22, but the price was right.

The one question i have is on a few of these 30-06 cartridges theres a blueish green residue on the outside of them, what is this? Should these cartridges even be around my house? Im not sure if i want to even touch them until i know what it is.

Its just corroded/oxidized brass, depending on how shallow the corrosion is they can probably be cleaned off and fired without issues.

They won't kill you or anything, but like with handling any ammunition you should always wash your hands well afterwards.
 
"...a bluish green residue..." Hi. That's the colour of copper oxide. Literally the copper coming out of the alloy. Happens with anything made of brass that gets/got wet. You'll see it on brass grommets on an elderly holster or a tent too.
Like Tyockell18 says, it won't hurt you or anybody you know. Unless they're sensitive to copper. Won't cause any unauthorized discharges though. Comes off with 0000 steel wool. Comes off your hide with regular soap and water. Just like the blue colour from a cheap gold ring or watch.
"...gave me one of his old .22's..." Registered? If not, you can register it without a lot of fuss with a phone call to the CFC(1-800-731-4000), but you must do so. Nobody will come looking for either of you. Don't worry if it doesn't have a serial number either. Still decidedly decent of him.
 
ok good, thanks for all your input guys. no its not registered, ill get on that now. was pretty cool of him to just give it up, he said hes just got no need for it anymore so it just handed it all over.
