Currently waiting for RPAL and excited to get into pistol shooting with an Ed Brown Kobra Carry that I am going to buy. Have been a member at The Grange Firearms Club in Gormley, Ontario for a couple months shooting rifles and shotguns....but just can't wait to get for first 1911 pistol : )

Greetings to everyone on this board and look forward to learning a lot from you !

Hi. Who is selling Kobra Carry's in TO? Just curious.
In any case, have you handled a Kobra Carry? Does it fit your hand(you can easily reach the trigger with no strain)? No point spending 3 grand if it doesn't. It's not the cartridge. the .45 is fairly comfortable to shoot, even with hot ammo, but it must fit your hand. If any handgun doesn't fit, you'll never be able to shoot it well. You won't be able to sell a 3 thousand dollar pistol easily. You'll never get anywhere near 3 grand for it either.
There are lots of good quality .45's that don't cost anywhere near $3,000. A Kimber Custom Target II, for example, runs $1,240.00 at Shooter's Choice, in Waterloo.
Factory .45 ammo isn't cheap either. Think around $25ish plus per 50. Get expensive quickly. Reloading helps, but it's cheaper to learn how to shoot a handgun with a .22.
The first handgun I owned that worked, 30 some years ago, was an issue .45. Soon bought a .22. Ammo was expensive then too.

Hi Sunray,

Thanks for your reply and advice. Actually I could not find any dealers in Ontario that sell Ed Brown pistols. There is a dealer in Manitoba called BDW Canada that has a few of them in stock plus other high-end pistols.

When I was in Arizona a couple months ago at a shooting range I was lucky to meet a guy that let me put a few mags thru his Kobra Carry and it just felt great. The action, the trigger ...the grip everything felt fantastic...so I guess that is why I decided to buy one.

I restled a bit with the idea of whether or not to start shooting on a .45 as opposed to a smaller calibre..but after shooting them for a couple months at the club and just talking talking to others I just went with the "shoot with what feels best to me" approach. You are right about the cost...it will not be cheap to shoot .45...

Greetings and welcome Socrates. Nice to have a fellow torontonian on board. Check out the prices at SFRC in the sponsor links at the top of the page. I don't know the pricing on .45, but I bought 1000 rnds of 9mm for a very good price. I'll be getting into reloading my own .45 ammo in the near future, and LeBaron seems pretty good for components.

Hello and welcome. I'm also from Toronto and looking to join a decent club for handguns... are you able to tell me about your experiences at The Grange?

While I'm still rank-ordering the criteria that constitues a 'decent club' for me (e.g. hours of operation, facilities, ammo types, etc), I'd like to hear thoughts from others in Toronto/GTA on their present clubs/ranges.

Currently looking at The Grange and Aurora Gun Club.... fairly large disparity in membership prices between the two.... particularly at renewal. Thanks in advance!

Hi XcentricK,

Well I have only been a member there for a couple months (The Grange) but so far so good. The facility is clean, well run and the staff are great. I also like the fact it is open 7 days which long hours too. I honestly did not look at other clubs nor have I been to any of the others in the GTA...so I cannot give you a comparison. All I can see is that it seems like a great club to me. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks Socrates - I've actually visited Target Sports when I was contemplating my first firearm. The staff there certainly seemed friendly, and the place did appear to be well kept.

Need to find a place soon.... itchin' to test out my new P229 Elite!
