Hi all. Decided to pick up a new hobby mid life-ish. I have always had and shot rifles since a kid, have shot but never owned a handgun.

I'm just north of Winnipeg, thought I would call the range Winnipeg Revolver and pistol association. I spoke with the contact there, it didn't go so well? Maybe I got him at a bad time but he told me I would not be welcome with a new center fire handgun unless I could shoot a bullseye at 60 feet? Then said they were not taking new members. Not much of a proponent for the sport. This all happened in about a 2 minute conversation when all I called about was the membership fees and if I could come and check the range out. I was left puzzled by the call. Anyone else have this experience?

I've been pretty pumped by my decision to join a range and start shooting maybe even do some competitive stuff in the future if it goes well, should I give him another try?

Don't want to be negative ,but this was a bit discouraging .any recommendations for a good range with supportive reps.

I had a discouraging contact there myself.
Have you heard of White Wolf range? It's up north from you but reports are that membership is more relaxed.

welcome to the club !

winnipeg pistol and revolver are a bunch of arrogant prix !

you have the selkirk range out your way and there is the firing line in the city, there is a new indoor range opening in transcona as well.

Cheers bud.

I shoot at the Firing Line gun club. It is near Marion and Lagimodiere. I have yet to have a bad experience there, all the guys I have met are very friendly. It is an indoor range, making fees a little higher; however I've found it to be very much worth it.

Welcome! I was a member at WPRA for a while, and it's not a bad club overall, but there it is a bit of an ol' boys club...If the membership chairman is still the same guy it was a couple years ago, he has a bit of an agenda when vetting new members.

He did everything he could to persuade my wife and myself to shoot .22cal bullseye as that is what his preference is...We just wanted to have fun.

The outdoor range is nice in the summer, as you can go when you like, and the ranges are fairly well maintained, but come winter months, you can only shoot on the 2 days the indoor range is open. Most of those days, you have to fight to get a lane, as they all unpack their stuff at the firing line and then head back into the clubhouse to shoot the breeze instead of their pistols...

I'm looking at either Selkirk or Steinbach myself for next year. Until then, it'll be non-restricted at the gravel pits again...

Again, welcome. There's a lot of information on here, and a bunch of great guys. Enjoy!

1) They want to make sure you can shoot before you shoot CF. People have shot up the target frames in the past. (Just watched Dirty Harry, bought a 44 mag, think they're dead shots;))
2)If you can walk, you can shoot all year round outside.

I have heard the membership is capped this year, although I'm not sure......

I hear you, he maybe just needs a little practice on his approach with people.("although
he sounds like an old dog not willing to learn new tricks)

BTW who is Dirty Harry? lol
I just watched "Shooter" if Mark Wahlberg can make a 2000 yard shot, I gotta be good for at least half that!

Cheers

You should come out on a Monday or Thursday night and take a look around. I believe it is correct that the executive have capped the membership at 250 members. If you like the look of the place, get yourself on the waiting list. It's a pretty friendly, has a lot to offer and the members are a welcoming bunch, and I wouldn't take your experience as indicative of some general bad attitude. The membership chairman tries to weed out guys. I've been a member, off and on, for 20 years, and I remember he didn't want me to join either.

If it was truly about making sure a person can shoot without hitting the frames, he would not be insisting on bullseye shooting. Instead, he would insist on starting in a more stable stance like the Weaver. I heard more than one time from him "its a hand gun, not a hands gun...)

And as for shooting in the winter, It is possible, but you have to trek though 2 feet of snow to get to the line, especially the large bore range.

I'm not saying it's a bad club, but for us, it was to much of a fudd-fest. YMMV

I joined Selkirk this year; besides being signifiacantly less dues, I've yet to run into many odd ducks. In fact I've got some rather good advice such as purchasing a decent spotting scope. Having a 200M rifle range is a plus. It's also my understanding they will try and have the pistol range certified for 100M this year.

I'm a member of Selkirk, and live in NK. I like Selkirk. This is my second year and I've yet to meet a jack@$$ there. The rifle range is great, and the pistol range is pretty good but one or two more picnic tables would be nice.

I'm also a member at Seven Sisters...a bit far for most, but they have do-it-yourself trap there. Bring a case of clays and a case of shells and have at it. The building is open all year round and has a woodstove (byow) and BBQ. I wish I had known sooner...would have gone out in the winter and made a day of it.

I too would like to know more about this Transcona range??????
