Hey guys, I've seen alot of listings lately for 37mm & 40mm launchers. What is the classification of the things and what can be done for rounds. I know nothing about them, but I have an armalite thats begging for one. :)

It seems that whenever we talk about them, posts get locked. The mods here don't even want people to explain what exactly their legal classification is, officially. They always say search, but in the end you find all kinds of information but no real answers.
We need a sticky on the subject that is locked, in which it shows exactly what the status of these items are, instead of just banning users and locking posts.

37mm flare launchers are not firearms and thus no more controlled than your pencil.

The 40mm M203 was once not a firearm but it was recently re-classed as restricted, which is bull####.

FYI -- According to the RCMP and NWEST - all 40mm stuff are now firearms...

That sucks, totally blows as a matter of fact. Now with that aside, are 40mm items still importable? I believe that I heard that their are restrictions on imports, even back when 40mm had no classification. Would anyone care to clear the air on that subject. It may be possible for me to get my hands on an M79 and I'd like to know if it's importable. And no, it's not coming out of the US, so their restrictions don't apply.

Oh no...

This coming from the guy who ruined it for all of us.

Are we sure about this? Arms East told me they could get me one a year or two ago since I'm military and an end user cert was possible. Not doubting you, just want to cover all the angles before I abandon this dream.
Being military gives you no special treatment what so ever. Unless of course your unit is buying it.

Leg:

I truly Do not mean to pee on your parade, and those in the know feel free to correct me, but I am in the process of buidling my first AR, and I when I checked, I had no issues finding, or have the suppliers I was dealing with getting me 14" barrels, heck I could have even had a 10" if I wanted it. I am not military, just a CGn'er :)

To those in the know

Now on the 37mm vs 40 mm It is my understanding that when compared:

- 40mm generaly have rifled barrels., 37 mm a smooth bore
- 40mm have a greater PSI rating.
-given the same ammo & sighting system being used, 40mm will place shots further and more accuarately
-there is a fairly wide range fo munitions for 40mm, most of which are resticted or controled

If I have missed anything please feel free to edmucate me, either here or via PM.

I am truly not trying to stir the pot here, I just would like to understand.

regads and all the best

We are starting to confuse all kinds of issues here.

AR barrel length - Canada could care less. Your AR is restricted regardless. The US will not allow export of non sporting barrels which they deem to be <16"

Grenade launchers- There was an issue with these as they were considered to be weapons of war and listed and controlled by the Controlled Goods Program. Since they (or many of them) are now considered firearms and have FRT numbers, these launchers are no longer Controlled Goods. It may therefore be possible to import them, IF you can find a country that will allow export for commercial sales.

Being in the military - no difference at all. Unless the weapons are owned by DND you cannot buy, or import anything that a PAL holder could not anyway.
