"floating part of the seating die gets mis-aligned" - sounds like another real good reason to completely dismantle and clean brand new, or used "new-to-me" dies - clean out stray bits of whatever, a bit of good light oil, check for burrs - then I will know what I am starting with. I must admit I had not done so with the Hornady set that I had used, but I will do so, now!!

I do have a Redding 6.5 Grendel die set that I used to use a lot, not anymore as the gun is prohibited now. If interested, send me a few brass and bullet so I can give it a try; may help eliminate your die-related concerns...

This is common with Hornady dies the floating part of the seating die gets misaligned, I’ve had it happen with just about every Hornady seating die I’ve used. Take it apart and clean it and then pay attention when you seat.

Interesting. I’ve taken it apart more than a few times trying to figure out what’s happening; never found any grit or anything like that in it. Maybe I’ll try some fine steel wool or emery with oil and polish the stem so it slides smoothly. I do have to say, I’m not super impressed with these dies. Rcbs are good and I’ve never had issues with them, but my preference is very much for Redding. Haven’t tried Whidden yet, but I hear good things.
