since i can't find ruger MK I grips anywhere, i've resolved to make them. where's a good source for wood with nice figure...

i was thinking of asking a cabinet maker, or harkwood flooring outfit for scraps...

ideas?

i guess depends on what type! i've seen nice padouk and goncalo alves at Lee Valley, but there's not a lot of figure on those. birdseye maple or flame maple could be VERY nice with a bit of stain and clearcoat.

if you want figure, try looking at places that cater to musicians / guitar makers / luthiers, since they're VERY picky on those things.

So, what's the deal with MKI vs MKII grips anyway? Could you not adapt a set of MKII grips to fit yours?

Did some research, wow, no slide release on MK1?
I guess can't adapt MKII as it sounds like material is missing :)

Teach yourself on cheap hardwood before you spend the money on fancy, high priced, wood.
Ruger Mk I grips are difficult to find because the pistol hasn't been made for years. They do surface at gun shows occasionally. That might not help much where you are though.

MKII grips do fit, but they look out of place as they have a notch for the slide release, where there is nothing on the MKI.

i have some plain walnut i was planning on practicing on...

now off to the numrich website!
