Anyone using them? I was thinking of putting some grip tape on my tanfo mags...just so the don't slip off my palm during a mag change.

That could be considered a "bumper pad", which is specifically permitted.
16. Original parts and components offered by the OFM as standard equipment, or as an option, for a specific model handgun on the IPSC approved handgun list are permitted, subject to the following:
16.1 Modifications to them, other than minor detailing (the removal of burrs and/or adjustments unavoidably required in order to fit replacement OFM parts or components), are prohibited. Other prohibited modifications include those which facilitate faster reloading (e.g. flared, enlarged and/or add-on magwells, etc.), changing the original color and/or finish of a handgun, and/or adding stripes or other embellishments.
16.2 Magazines accessible to a competitor during a COF must not contain more than 15 rounds at the Start Signal. Identifying marks or decals, internal capacity limiters, bumper pads and additional witness holes, which add or remove negligible weight to/from magazines, are permitted.

Just so it is clear what i meant...i mean grip tape on mag pads. Production division.
 
In my interpretation, decals are grip tape....as i have seen paint, magic marker and masking tape on mag base pads. I guess i just assumed wrong that grip tape could only be on the grip area of the pistol.
 
be careful...

marker or masking tape are intended to number (identify) the mags. Grip tape is not.

We had a guy bumped to Open at the 2008 Ont Provincials for having grip tape on his mags in Prod Division. I'm not aware of any rules changes since then that would change that (although admittedly I haven't really looked)

I have used tape on mag bases in my Standard mags and over the years of using and trying mags without the tape can say, no significant advantage with tape or without.
Learning right technique, adjusting mag pouches can be more beneficial then grip tape.

the almunium base pads get smoother over prolonged use. The rubber pads are no issue. IN the US, I use the aluminum as they have to fit in the production box according to USPSA rules. I had at least 2 mags slip at the US Nationals...one right in front of a door. Cost me a good second or more.

Can colored grip tape be used to indentify according to color. Red, blue, grey, white, clear, black,..etc

Just trying to find out where in the rule book.....I will read it again.:redface:

Grip tape for Production may be a no-no but if they are getting smooth from use I think you would be fine if you could get someone to bead blast them to bring them back to factory spec....?
 
hmmmm....I am trying to remember back, but didn't Eugene post a question like that before? I seem to remember Vince saying it was ok, but after a rule change it would not be allowed. Not sure how that turned out aside from Eugene getting the boot from Global Village....
 
Dawson Precision sells grip tape with numbering for the mag bases...maybe that would work and be legal;)

orrrr, you could just stick with open and do whatever you want.:ar15:

I would stick with Open, but then that would not be fair for you...:p

actually, I got a reply that it is perfectly legal to use grip tape as a bumper pad. It would not be an efficient bumper pad btw, but a bumper pad none-the-less.

Yes and yes.

Appendix E3 previously prohibited the application of tape on base pads, but that restriction was removed from the January 2012 HG Rulebook, because we wanted to allow the use of bumper pads (see Point 16.2 of the PD rules).
 
you can "engrave" numbers on to the bottom of your base pads with a wood burning tool. Its all rady been questioned and approved at a level 3 by some high ranking offcials
