So i've been eyballing a griz mag for a long time, then I spotted th adkal 1919 and was going to wait for that..... i'm gettin impatient so i've been thinking about a griz so i have a few questions.

I realize throwing a sidesaddle on a mag fed seems stupid but i want to anyways. Will it take the same one as an 870? from the pictures it looks like the trigger group pins are in the same spot as my 870 but i can't be sure.

can you drop a single shell in and fire or do you have to feed from the mag? I'm just thinking of a 3gun match where i need 1 more shot and i run outa mags... it's happened with my rifles before lol. I beleive in going home with ammo ;). i thought i read somewhere the griz has a last shot holdopen, so if i drop the mag and throw a shell in from underneath it should feed alright?

how short of bbl can you put on it before the bbl is shorter than the end of the pump? i've been thinking an 8.5 inch would be fun, but without having a gun in my hot hands i can't do any measureing. I plan on keeping a fixed length stock on it (speedfeedIII w/ pistol grip) so i'd have to do some measuring to be sure, but i'm sure OAL would be fine.

Sidesaddle for an 870 will fit the Grizz Mag.

Yes, you can drop a single round in without the mag - I do that either for loading 6 rounds or for shooting 3" shells as they don't feed reliably in the magazines.

12.5" barrel would be flush with the end of the mag tube, so that would be the shortest. However, CanAm is expected to be bringing in the 8.5" Mag Fed at some point this year...

one more question. can you drop a shell in the ejection port with a mag in and close teh action or does the last shot holdopen make it impossible to close the action with a mag in?
 
Bolt is locked back on an empty mag. Dropping in one shell would require you to either depress the follower and rack it forward (watch your fingers!) or drop the magazine slightly thus foresaking your feed ramp and risking a jam.

IMO, keep the side saddle for topping off magazines only.
 
IMHO the 12.5" is as short as I would go.

I have test fired mine with 5 slugs, all hit bullseye @ 10M. The ghost ring sights are really neat and accurate right out of the box.

I have cleaned and oiled it, put on a cheapo SKS sling and hung it on the wall. There it will stay until a Grizzly bear wanders into my home at 3:00AM. It is a "fun" gun, albeit a bit heavy if you are considering hiking with it. Then again it can serve as a formidable club.
 
To start, the magazine follower acts as the bolt hold/lock open.

So with a magazine in you would have to jam the shell into the port, as you have to push the follower down with the use of the shell to fit it in place. This is basically impossible to do with any reliability.
I have thought about "pinning" the magazine so that the follower wont come up as far, but i suspect it would cause feeding issues as the last round would not get pushed up as far.

You can easily load a single shell without the magazine, BUT you have to tilt the gun to the side as the shell will simply fall out the big hole in the bottom of the receiver without a mag in it.

I believe the 18/15/12.5" grizzly's are all the same basic length when it comes to the slide and unused ex magazine tube. The 12.5 forearm grip goes right to the front of the barrel, so a shorter barrel is not possible.
The 8.5" grizzly's are shorter tubes, limiting changing barrels.
 
The more I use my mag-fed Grizzly, the less I like it. Reliability is always a problem and it is far less flexible in loading options than a traditional tube fed. Its only saving grace is the badass look.
