I know and have met a lot of Fish & Wildlife Officers and have NEVER heard any of them suggest or complain of low grizzly bear numbers in Alberta… particularly southwest Alberta.
In fact, I have been extremely impressed with the latest studies and research being conducted by SRD and Andrea Morehouse in trying to determine actual (minimum) numbers in the southwest portion of the Province, excluding National Parks. There are a lot of bears and this is now public record.
The moratorium was politically driven but was also the result of poor or non-existant research into actual population numbers and habitat considerations. It was much easier for the politicians and bureaucrats to manage hunters than to manage the wildlife. If my memory serves me correctly, the annual draws in Alberta resulted in 8 to 11 bears taken per year.
I agree that there is a lot of B.S. and mismanagement on the issue of Grizzly bears but I don’t think it is the fault of Fish & Wildlife… they are just doing what they are told to do. It is unfortunate. My opinion anyway.
What ever does Jesus have to do with it?
He is not in trouble for the self defence part of the situation. He had shot at a Grizzly when he did not have a permit for it. Thants when he got in trouble with the law. When he went looking for the bear he got in trouble with the bear.

I am pretty sure Fish & Wildlife has never said there were "no more grizzlies left in Alberta" That is just an exaggeration that people use when they don't understand something.
I read somewhere that ASRD has data showing there is sufficient numbers to support a G-bear hunt in the south western part of the province, but they don't have the balls to deal with the political whining that would follow it.
I'm betting the whole province has always had a huntable population, they just don't want to admit it. Lot of pseudo science , based on political pressure, went into the ban. Without the Hunt, you can't argue that a dramatic increase in bears has taken place and is causing a redistribution which is leading to more bear, human conflicts. They're trying to come up with a deal to deal with the South West bears and no surprise, our Native Brethren are part of the proposed solution.

Not self defense, poaching. When grizzly kills are investigated they look to determine what happened, why it happened and how it happened. If the bear simply attacked without being provoked and somebody killed it then it is self defense and perfectly legal for everyone involved. Accidentally shooting the wrong species was where this guy went wrong making it an illegal act, again going solely off the details in the news article. He had a black bear tag, not grizz. Grizzlies are protected in AB, there is no draw or open season like BC. If he had come across the bear and it attacked him without being provoked then he will not be charged with its death. That still could be the case if there is no bullet or bullet wound in the bear. CO's will investigate the kill site and may just find a dead black bear. No ones knows right now but I'd like to find out how this ends.
So, I "understand"that there were only 6 grizzlies south of hiway 3. Back when SRD did the study???

I'm not a fan of waiting. If you shoot something and it heads into the bush you should follow it up before it either a) buggers off, or, b) decides it wants to murder you.
