What ya figure guys??? I was hunting yesterday morning in country that contains both so i am wondering what you folks think.

I looked at a couple of things and came up with a griz. First off is the distance from the pad to the claw marks on the hind foot, the claw marks of a black bear would be very close to the toes. Although the front claw marks look a bit close, that could be a result of the consistency of the sand. Toes marks are close together, black bear toes are spread apart. The other thing is that there is a distinct drag mark behind the front paw print which is consistent with a griz or polar bear sweeping his paw forward with that pigeon toed gate they have.

If it is a grizzly track, it's that of a very small bear.

The nail prints of a grizzly are always farther from the pad and somewhat elongated rather than only points as in the picture.

Yes it is a small bear, but still a grizzly...

Good sized black bear.
Claws are just too close, even for a smaller Grizzly bear.
Big blacks often walk a tad pidgeon toed as well.
I've seen quite a few black tracks in our area that are that big....

The nail prints in Grizzly tracks are always elongated becuase the claws are relatively flat, not curved like those on a cat. Black bear claws, on the other hand are very curved and print exactly as those shown.

I agree with catnthehatt. They are almost certainly tracks of a large black bear.

I still think it is a young griz but I would not be surprized if I was wrong.

I think the front track is distorted somewhat in the soft mud. The rear track however shows the typical claw marks well out in front of the toes. I would like to see a section of tracks from this bear rather than just the two shown.

Notice in this picture the front paw, forget the rear for a minute. See the small indentations quite a ways out front of the front paw, the claw marks...

They are hard to see, but blow up the pic and have a look. They are usually much more pronounced, could just be bad track to analyze. But if you blow it up they are there and much too far forward for any black bear.
