Just wondering how many folks here use grizzly protection while out fishing or in the back country etc? Whats your weapon of choice

Oh no!

12ga, birdshot - aim for the eyes!;)

The general consensus here is if you can't pack a "real" rifle - carry a shorty 12ga loaded to the nuts with your favorite brand of 3" slug.

I agree with the consensus.

That said, If you want a rifle - a 45-70 (if you reload) or a 450 marlin would be my choice.

Yuck, did I just suggest a lever gun?

I prefer a sharp rock pick and a very fat field assistant.

When the griz approaches, smack your assistant in the knee with the pointy end of your rock pick.

You don't have to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun your partner!

When we used to go camping out in the middle of nowhere on the island where there was a fear of running into black bears or cougers, we used to carry a 12g with us.

Not sure on the exact load though.. I was a kid at the time.

Just take Grizzly mans cousin with you and keep him between you and the bears.
But in all logic a 12 pump with slugs and buckshot stacked should do the trick.

I wasn't going to bite this time, but.....If you are packing a shotgun for protection against the big bears do not load shot. The reason for this is that you cannot foresee the circumstances that might require you to shoot. The only sure big game stopping round available to the shotgunner is a slug...usually several slugs.

Although it is not a tactic I agree with, I've known some people to shoot bears in the rump with fine birdshot to drive them away. Should you be tempted to use this technique there would be time to load a round of bird shot, if there is no time - then you need the slugs. To my way of thinking this technique of shooting bears with birdshot effectively results in a wounded bear, and wounded bears are a hazard. There is little excuse for this today, now that less than lethal shotgun rounds are available, such as rubber bullets, or cracker shells. In any case, particularly when in heavy cover and on foot, the first round in the gun should be a slug.

My hat off to any fella who can hold still enough to spray a griz in the eyes with pepperspray.....I'll bet there aren't many who have done it.

Better to beat yourself to death with the can and be done with it.

If you carry a 12g, use slugs, buckshot and lots of it. Bears don't usually die easy. If you are close enough to a bear to clearly see his eyes, you are in a lethal situation. Best to win that one.

Moose02,

Don't be offended by the smart alec replies.
Because there have been a zillion bear defense threads on here, we usually tease the guy a bit first.

The concensus (here) is to use slugs and nothing else. Buckshot has been tested thoroughly by Gatehouse, our resident expert, and buckshot does not penetrate sufficiently to stop a bear.

2/34" or 3" slugs are best, whichever you can shoot accurately. Brenneke slugs have the best penetration, being harder than most.

And last, you must practice practice practice until you are proficient with your firearm under stress!

Good luck! ;)

^ wouldnt a 12g shotty with buck shot be better?
Since your under pressure itll be easier to hit a bear with it... im sure 6 shells full of buck shot will scare a disable a bear enough for you to survive.

probably not. it would most likely only piss the bear off more and will be coming at you faster and harder then before especially a grizzly.

shoot bears with bullets/slugs not pellets.

Im sure that you'll injure the bear and it may die after but it will still get you before it dies. shooting a grizzly with shot will only infuriate him in an life or death type rage against you and well we know who is going to win that one.

Each pellet has only about the same energy as a .32ACP, not near enough IMO even if you got most or all of them on target. You might only get one or two shots off so you want them to pack a wallop.
All the knowledgeable experts say stick with slugs and know how to shoot them accurately.
(I'm heading off into grizz country this morning to do some surveying....will have a 12.5" 870 with SLUGS) ;)

Cheers
