I was wondering how much velocity i was loosing with that 8.5 inch with a cheap rifled slug HP Winny 1600 fps 2 3/4, brought my 11-87 turkey gun ( 20 inch long )to compare, installed the Oehler at 10 feets and got to shoot 10 slug in the 11-87 and 20 in the Grizzly, out of the 11-87 they were averaging 1520 fps, out of the grizzly they average 1290 fps... 230 fps for 11.5 inch difference, the lost is a lot less than i expected, like 20 fps to the inch... A one once slug at 1290 fps would be very lethal within 30 metres, was fun doing that... Cheers. JP.

I have to had that the Standard Deviation for the 8.5 was better than my 20 inch turkey 11-87. The average SD for the 8.5 was 27 and for the 11-87 it was 33 so actually with the numbers only the shorty 8.5 should be more accurate... Cheers. JP.

fast powder in shot shells. Doesn't need as much barrel length to build pressure. Its kinda like how .22long rifle reaches max velocity in about a 12" barrel and actually loses velocity due to friction in longer barrels....or at least that's what an old grumpy gunsmith said one day... but the theory sounds about right at least

The 8.5 certainly tend to prove that almost 85% of the velocity is reach in the first 10 inch, quite interresting... Cheers. JP.

Surprising is right, I would have figured the 8.5s to be only a little better than the 6.5s, which run a regular 2 3/4 slug at only 1050-1100 fps if various online figures are to be believed.

Would not be surprised at all if the difference between the 6.5 and the 8.5 add up to 50 to a 100 fps, at the start of the combustion the burning values must be kind of exponential... Cheers. JP.

And it would be very interresting if one of you gentleman take the 6.5 and the chrony so we could know from 6.5 to 20 inchs you could buy the same slugs 2 and 3/4 the gray Winny box that say one once at 1600 fps... Cheers. JP.

Just bought 10 boxes of the top Sabots slugs High velocity 12 guage 3 inch to make somemore tests with the 8.5 in the week end, will post results... Cheers. JP.
