grizzly 8.5

with a Hogue short LOP (12") stock on it, it comes in at 26.5" OAL... which is just over the legal min, and a very compact yet fully functional shotgun.

an 870 LEO topfolder and an 18" barrel comes in at roughly the same length.

Why are people saying that the 8.5" Grizzly with a pistol grip would be restricted? It should be prohibited as it follows the definition of a prohibited firearm in that it is:

"a rifle or shotgun that has been altered to make it less than 660 mm (26 inches) in overall length;"

Is there something I am missing here?

Yup, you're missing the word "altered" if it comes from the factory that way, it's not altered, reversible user installable options aren't altering the firearm, a hacksaw however is.

For those who can be interested:

Here's something I did with my Dominion Arms Grizzly 8.5in barrel...

There was a safety issue with it, so I added a little protection on the handguard.

If anybody is interested into having the specs and also the "How-to" of how I did that, feel free to ask, i'll try to give my best shot to explain it...

Here is the modification to the Grizzly 8.5":

Well that is good to know; learn something new every day.

Yup, stupidest (is that a word outside of gun law?) piece of crap legislation ever written by a human being - consider:

buy an 18 inch 870 and cut it down to 14 inches - prohibited weapon

buy a Dominion 8.5 inch perfectly fine,

buy an 18 inch 870 and buy a Dlask 8.5 inch barrel, that's good too - BUT replace the 8.5 inch Dlask barrel with the chopped one, prohibited weapon EVEN IF the gun actually gets longer.

Z while I applaud your solution, to your problem. I just can't get my head around the way you are holding the fore end in your picture with the thumb in front of the muzzle? It look awkward and unnatural to me!

A retention strap like seen on some mossbergs might be a more comfortable solution for securing the grip...the plastic stub at the end of the Gizz 8.5 foreend is not that great as a handguard that's for sure.

I like the strap solution, it's something I would take in concern.

As for the picture, I exagerated the motion of my thumb a little for the purpose, but it can get in the way of the muzzle THAT EASILY in stressful situation...

I have relatively long hand and fingers (I'm 6'3") and it was getting in the front of the barrel easily.

I got my thumb blackened on the side from deflagration one time and since that day, I was trying to figure out a way to prevent my thumb from getting too far on the handguard.

As this shotgun (with this lenght) is considered a self-defense shotgun for large animals (Grizzly, bears, etc) or hmmm Home Hmmm Defense, it's easy in these stressful situations to get your hands in front of the muzzle if you're not careful enough.

Most of the time in these events (when the grizzly charge you or when you go past the corner of your wall, in the dark night) you fire from the hip!

So being able to know where your thumb is resting, is something that comforts me...

Just looking at the picture of your thumb in front of the muzzle makes me cringe. Not a bad solution, you could use the guard to bash zombie heads too.

Personally I'd go with a tactical choke:

I bought mine to fit into the bag attached to the rack of my ATV, works great! I bought the scrabbard as well and I carry my Grizzly in the winter over my back on the SKi-Doo as well. I use it so much simply because it is so easy to transport.

Makes sense. For me I think it would work good for bear and cougar protection here on the island when I'm grouse hunting. I don't feel very safe carrying a .22 for grouse up in the mountains; need something light for animal protection. Ever since I came across a HUGE black bear holding nothing but a 6 mm Remmington I have been very wary.

So get the muzzle threaded for chokes. Makes the firearm a lot more versatile too!

Actually, the goal is to keep to overal lenght to it's minimum to stay unrestricted and short enough. Not adding more lenght.

But to help control the recoil, I already have this muzzlebrake on my Fabarm Martial Proforces (14"):

Mine looks exactly like this one:

I am waiting for my Fabarm Martial Pro Forces 14" w/ LPA Sights to come in to The Shooting Edge. I don't like the pistol grip/ Pro Forces stock so I will be switching that out to the regular Tactical stock.

In the end it will look like this:

I have fired about 50 shots through mine. Basically the little time I do have with my 8.5 I did not find this to be a problem as I am 6' 3" with monkey arms and Jack Skellington hands.

Now that I am aware of this potential problem (the other thing to be weary of is muzzle direction with it being so short) though I will definitely be watching out for myself and other when this 8.5 is in use. It is easy to forget something as little as this.

I do not think I will be doing this mod though. My .02 cents (with ain't worth crap)is I believe education, awareness and common sense come into play here. That is not to say that this mod should not be considered by others.

That is a nice shotgun! :p

By the way, does yours would have the heatshield on the barrel, like the one on the picture?

Mine will be the exact same as the one pictured. The Fabarm Martial Pro Forces 14" comes with heatshield and LPA sights and a tactical pistol grip. The Shooting Edge is changing the stock out for me once their shipment is in.
