Grizzly Bear Defence rifle

Hi all,

I do a lot of "hiking" in the back country in areas where ATV's cannot go, etc. Lots of wildlife, and lots of brown bear sign. I need a rifle that will not have a scope, is relatively light, and can stop a charging grizzly. I've been leaning towards getting a 45-70 but they seem to be over priced and have expensive ammo. Maybe not the best choice? ANY Recommendations?

Disclaimer no experience w grizzly. I know black bears are jaw dropping fast. If it was me I'd carry a 12 g double barell w slugs. At the hips . And a back up
 
Geez boren, are we related ?? This is the second time I've 2nd'ed your posts in a couple days !! Only thing is this time I'd go with a semi (cause I got one) instead - I'd rather have 5 than 2 !!! And the back-up would be my SKS for 5 quick ones on top !! My 308's a bolt ;-( Somw SSTs would prob be nice in the SKS.

What value do you put on your life?

If you are seriously concerned by bears (BTW, you are more likely to be killed in a big-city cross-walk than being eaten by a bear) would you place your faith in a Chinese knock-off assembled by a disgruntled serf rather than a quality North American or European firearm?

If you are hiking in the foothills where angry critters may suddenly surprise you with a reactionary charge you want that gun in your hand at all time not slung on your shoulder or heaven forbid strapped to a pack. A short-barreled 12 gauge loaded with slugs would fit the bill as would most rifles 30 calibre and larger loaded with heavy bullets. Action type is actually irrelevant as if you are indeed subjected to a real charge from close range you will at best get off one shot. Accuracy is measured in width of bear skull at 10 feet not MOA.
 
Those Hornady tipped slugs are super accurate, I think one of those in the forehead will make him think twice

The obvious answer is a 577 Tyrannosaur. Anything smaller might bounce right off!
 
This is part of my BBQ tool kit I use late in the fall when the black bears are getting a little too brave. Living in the bush is great but it does come with slightly different irritants than you find in the city. ;)

I like something guaranteed. Let both barells go. I'd go for the body. Semi works most of the time. I'd probably have my 12g over 308. Same thing 180gr and slug both in the body at the same time if I had the option

I saw a comment suggesting that I'm a city boy, which I'm not. lol. I grew up in the bush, hunted a lot in my youth but I stopped hunting for almost 20 years and only recently started getting back into it. I have killed many animals. I do not own a rifle because I can borrow one from my dad or brother ( several dozen rifles between them). This will be the first gun that I purchase myself. Last year I was charged by a blackbear while holding a loaded .308 Henry long ranger with 165gr Nosler Partition. It was scary but I think I did rather well. I held my ground and was able to back away slowly and get some distance. I had two other black bear encounters last year which weren't as bad as the one previously described. I saw lots of grizzly tracks, but didn't actually see a grizzly (caught one on a trail camera though).

Anyone have any experience with Pedersoli Guidemaster 4570? I've read some good arguments for 30-06 which is a caliber that I like. Was thinking a BLR 30-06 with a heavier load might be good. I'd prefer a lever action since I'm left handed.

P.S. Sorry if this is a worn out topic. lol. I appreciate the satire nature of these comments. :D Lots of great calibers and great rifles. Just trying to get as much input as I can before making a decision. I hunt exclusively with my late uncle's Browning 30-06. It's pretty much my gun but my dad retains ownership. I don't like to pack it on the trails because it's extra wear and tare on the rifle which has alot of sentimental value.
