Grizzly Bears.... and other things

i was charged twice just a couple of months ago.give or take.. by a big grizzly boar.the last charge was from 60 - 70 yards to a screetching halt at about 35 (37 paces).i can only stress that i suggest anyone carrying a gun for close quarters defense against big bear look into a automatic 12 bore shotgun.the only context i can estimate the speed of this thing was comparing his rate of closing against my 2 dogs who where standing beside him before he bolted at me.adrenalin causes everything to slow down but by the time he had stopped, stood up and did a spastic sort of swaying with his front paws and i had lowered my rifle to get a better visual, the dogs where still ru nning to catch up.i can expect most peoples motor skills to deteriorate in such circumstances.pumps are easy to short stroke unless alot of training is undertaken.another thing to keep in mind is,you probably will smell a bear before you see him a close contact ranges so trust your senses

Ok So tell the Story!! You can't say "I was charged by a pissed off sow and 3 cubs" and not tell the story! Very Happy Did you Plow her?

Ahhhhh..... I would be here all night  It is best told around the campfire anyways. Nope, didnt kill her, only would have if we had to and trust me it was close. If we had to kill her we would have been killing all four of them in the long run cause the cubs wouldlnt have made it through the winter.

Here is a pic of them after they finally left the area with some warning shot persuasion  . She had a dead horse in the trees where she is heading in the picture. Sorry about the quality, but you get the idea.

Got charged by a c.o. last year for having a loaded gun on my quad. Tried to defend myself with a twenty but he wouldn't go for it.

LOL Nice!

Bulkley Mouse, I did a search and didn't find anything  Do you have a copy of the article? To post a Picture you have to have it hosted. Go to www.photobucket.com and upload it. Then use the [img*]www.BM'spicture.com/bear.jpg[/img*] (Without the *'s) and the picture will show up here.

ULFHEDNAR, That was a Good un ;-) Nice work! I'm gettin that Defender which is a pump. I May have to do some training. Can you get an Auto 12 with a large mag? i'm assuming you're maxed out at 5? or is it 3 with a Shotgun  Perhaps something to consider for a future Purchaise. The Smell Depends on which way the wind is blowing  he could end up ambushing me if he so desired. I have talked to a few guys who say you won't even know their there untill their on top of you. Scary thought! i know what you mean though.

crazy_davey, Were you Struggling to set your apature and shutter speed settings before she slipped into the woods or were you shaking a little bit because you were charged by a 1000+-Lb Sow and 3 Cubs who could have been eating you, Dead horse Ala mode, if they had wanted to? But seriously, that could have turned out very bad. 3 Cubs and a Dead horse? You're lucky she wasn't PMSing too

You could talk about Eye-liner application and it would sound good around a campfire :D ......of course eye-liner application is a Scary Subject   [/img][/b]

I have pics of the hungry hill bear somewere, will look tonight and see if I can get them up, and yes Bulkley , a second 1000 pounder is impresive as hell on that ranch.

the hungry hill bear Wally was a 5 year veteran of beef eating , when the COs finaly got it , it was in a cable leg snare ( I beleive it was a can snare they call it) as they pulled up the bear busted the cable and charged them was the story getting shot out of the window of the CO truck , the mount looks like hell but the size will intimidate even a hearty outdoorsman , the grizz that got the guide in tweedsmuir park a few years ago was also a 1000 pound bear class , when the chopper flew over and first saw the bear dead in a medow it looked like a VW bug parked in a swamp.

I chatted with a buddy last night from camp via radio phone , they saw 6 grizz in a 4 hour span at ootsa lake area on the weekend ( but we expect that from that area) and yes Wally I know the Neave family here , and I take it your refering to Ed as in owner of ride rage clothing ?

Wally
I make a point of taking extra shells with me when I do site inspections, find a safe place to practice and go for it. In the summer I am out for one week every month, so I get some practice in once a month. Take some big chunks of cardboard with you and draw a bear on it.

I use birdshot to practice the loading, cycling and aiming, then move up to 2 ¾ slugs for practice. Every year I burn off my ready ammo, those 3” slugs hurt!!

I carry 2 ¾” ,3”,3”,3”, 2 ¾” slugs in my gun with an extra load on the stock and bear spray on my hip if the gun fails.

Was walking through a cutblock in the Ootsa lake area near the rapids that flow from Tatachuck lake a couple of years ago, around the time that the person was killed. I felt the hair on my neck go up and knew I was being watched, suddenly a big bull moose came out of the woods, I started breathing again, he was sort of going my way, so I followed at a respectable distance, figuring that if he was only worried about me , then I didn’t have to worry to much.

that whole area is one place, I won't get out of the truck without a gun, and that's just to get to the coffee shop!

Is Bill of Bill's gun in burn's Lake still around? Had a nice chat with him last time I was up there. Next time I come up that way we can have a Gunnutz pub night!

yea bill is still around , there is no longer bardges crossing ootsa this year and West fraser mills has abandonded there timber over there we were told , everything is to dry now , and by all means throw out a PM when your coming up beer is always in order

Ahhhhh! Thanks Bone. Bulkley Misspelt "hungry" that's why it didn't come up in the search. Awesome Story http://www.outdoorlife.com/outdoor/adventure/oftheweek/article/0,19912,1088438,00.html

now back to bears...and I think they will all be gone to bed now, woke up thismorning to 2" of snow on the ground here and heard theres close to 10" up the mountain :D

Nice. Yeah, It would be great to see him do something with that Company. You know Elwin too eh? I Guess Burns lake is pretty small ;-)

Yes, ... Back to bears...... So you seen any good Movies lately? :D

yes Elwin has done a fair bit of custom work for my 4x4's especialy when he had the decal company and no dont rent unleashed it wasnt very good IMHO but the longest yard was freeking hilarious

oh yea bears .....theres snow in the high country here now so sows and cubs will be starting to look for dens and black bears should almost all be gone to bed by now as a normal year would unfold anyways :D

bone-collector, I've seen The Longest Yard and I won't rent Unleashed :D
theres snow in the high country here now so sows and cubs will be starting to look for dens
Great, That makes things alot more interesting  There's nothing like a Grizzly poping up out of the snow to premote Regularity  Carry around a Fresh pair of Gooch.

Actualy, now that I think of it, It was Ed that told me a Story about a Guy up there Getting attacked while Checking his Trap line. Apparently a Grizz popped up out of the snow and after the attack he dragged him self back to his Snowmobile, then rode back to his truck, then drove down to the Hospital  Apparently when he walked into the hospital his Skelp was Frozen in a Vertical position and he was so torn appart a few Nurses fainted or something. It was a hell of a good story but with Ed you have to watch that you're not steppin in the Bull#### :D

Thanks CV32. That was a good Addition!
