Grizzly bullet for 30-06

110gr Vmax or the 168gr TSX!

A grizz is just a slightly stouter, scruffier blackie with big claws and a bad attitude...still require blood/air to keep upright.

When I get draw this year (hoping) I'll use a 140gr TSX from my 7-08AI or my 280AI.

Just a little stouter!:runaway:

Get a bigger gun.

If your going to use an '06, be sure to use a premium bullet 180 grains or larger. But don't shoot a bullet that will kick your brains out either. If you can't handle the gun, than your bear poop. Good luck with your choice.

in this hypothetical situation, i would go with the 200gr partition.

draw results come out in 15 days or so.

I've seen a 160gr X bullet from a 7RM penetrate both shoulders of a decent sized coastal grizzly. If there had been another bear behind it, I bet it would have taken him out as well!!:dancingbanana:

I odn't see the need for anything more than your moose load of a 168gr TSX.. use a 180gr if you think the 12gr's will make a diference.;)

Call me a coward (I am), but if I decided that I really wanted to hunt grumbly bears I would not be using a .30-06. Oh sure, if that's all I had, blah blah, blah, sure. But given the choice, and lots of time in advance, I would be carrying a hell of a lot more gun.

Most of you know I have played with most of the big boomers. I think my comfort level for big nasty critters would be at 8 mm Rem Mag/.338 Rem Mag and up to about .378 Wby. Above that I am not man enough to hang on to the gun. Or to be more precise, to hold on to a rifle in a weight I could hunt with. 762nato's rifle in .416 Rigby was manageable, but it also weighed about 12 pounds and I do not have a gun-bearer to carry the bloody thing!

Even a .300 Win Mag, which is a lot more gun than a .30-06 in the same calibre, would be too small for my comfort zone.

also I inquired months ago about the availability of the Woodleigh 240 grainer, and was told by the Canadian importer of woodleigh that they would not be bringing any of them into Canada :( I imagine they would be quite the hammer inside 200 yards

Just for a laugh I checked Midway- they're o/s on those and "no back-order" (dropping them?) but they have 200 gr. and only $28/box. :( Not available to us up here of course. Same with North Fork, although there was a rumour that someone was arranging with Corlane's to import a bunch of North Forks. (Pricey, though- likely about the same as A-Frames.)

I say, any bonded bullet will be my preference and of course I will go heavy.
For 1-10" twist 180-200grain,
for 1-11" will settle on something between 168-180grain

I like TBBC and Swift A-frame, but I hear lots of good about TSX.

Lots of choices, not enough bears ;)

200 Partition or 180 TSX. No sweat at all! No Grizzly will handle many of those and have any amount of fight left. Either would break both shoulders of a big grizz. A 24" 30-06 will make close to 2700 with the 200 Partition or 2800with the 180 TSX. That will Penetrate very well indeed. Regards, Eagleye.

Hey Tod, if you draw a grizzly LEH, I'll loan you my Ruger .338Mag if you wanna use a real bear gun ;) Those 225gr TBBC's punch big holes through moose & elk out to as far as you care to shoot and will put the hurt any bear that walks :D

seems to me the 240 gr Woodleigh was only going to be a limited run to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 30-06. The bullet was supposed to be designed specifically for use in the '06, and the intended targets to be Australian buffalo

a scan of my supply of 30 caliber bullets reveals a few candidates - 168 grain Triple Shocks, 180 grain Partition Golds, 180 grain Accubonds, and 200 grain Lapua Mega

I find out in two weeks if I get drawn :) never applied before

I kinda wish I didnt sell my Ti stocked stainless 700 in 338 Win Mag I had last year, but oh well :D

I feel there are too many alternatives to settle for an 06 in this situation. I am a .30-06 fan through and through but i get an uneasy feeling looking at that "smallish" bullet even in a 220 grainer. I saw my first Grizz this year one month after gutting my whitetail buck 200 yards from the same spot and have started to rethink what i should be carrying in that area. Some say when they hear a rifle shot they think its the dinner bell and they come snoopin.

After thinking about this for real, like I would be the one hunting, the 30-06 is an excellent choice of caliber if thats what a person is confident with to place that shot where it counts(break the large shoulder bones).Nosler Partition 200 or 220 grain would get the nod. :D

Are you gonna get the "squeeling, granola munching, hiker screams" for your FoxPro ? :p

Best of Luck with your Draw.....I've put in for over a decade now
Maybe this Spring ? ;)

Im sorry to hear that the 240 gr woodleigh is no longer available. I really wanted to try those. If i had known they were a limited run i would have laid up a supply!!! Oh well, i missed out on the barnes original 250gr (.30 cal) as well a few years ago also. I found out to my dismay they too are no longer available. Well limiting ourselves to 220gr, which isn't too bad, I couldn't see any bear shrugging off either a 220gr partition or a 200gr tsx out of a 30-06. For that matter i have seen my 180 gr tsx penetrate the full length of a deer after hitting bone, frontal shot slightly quartering away, thru the biggest part of shoulder on a +225lb buck, (i know not a bear but still impressive penetration) so... i would guess a 200gr tsx would be even more goodness :)

As an aside: I have a good friend who was a hunting guide for many years in the toodoggone and troista lake areas of BC and has seen and taken more game then i hope to in a lifetime. His choice for EVERYTHING, a jungle carbine 303 that he has used as long as ive known him!!!

(magnum flameproof suit on) :):D

Before I forget, here's a pic of a grizzly from your neighbourhood that the CO's removed :) You sure you still want to tackle one of these interior grizzlies with a .30-06 ;)
